It's not always easy and you don't know what you are getting into, when in truth, you are just going to the match to watch the lads.

Conversely, the match is probably the best place to challenge them.

First, they know they shouldn't be saying this.
Second, you are not really doing it to reason with them, but for the benefit of people sitting nearby, who may next time challenge them, or if they share the same views, won't be keen to express them in future. It would be pointless arguing with them at a Fascist march for example.

Also less likely to break out into fisticuffs inside the stadium.

I've mentioned before, I was in the N Stand when someone behind me was calling Hellion a black bastard.
I did challenge him, stood up, turned round, to be faced with someone a lot bigger than me with an interesting arrangement of facial piercings.

I thought bollocks, but as I was on my feet, I called him " A f***ing racist tosser"

He replied " I might be a tosser, but I'm not a racist!"

And that was that.

I genuinely hope this isn’t true as I was at the game today with my mate who is black. Thankfully I didn’t hear anything where we were (the end close to the drum).

It’s doubly disappointing because I’ve noticed an increase in the amount of black / Asian fans travelling to away games to support the lads over the last few years. I’d hate to think they could be put off from going to the game by a minority of cretins.

I thought the stanley knife comment from the 40+ women was weird but didnt know about the lady who had her coat slashed so yes could well have been a direct reference to that.

Absolute nonsense. You have absolutely no idea how someone is going to react so some people may feel very intimidated at the thought. I called out some lads on a bus a few years ago doing monkey chants at passers by and one of them ran the length of the bus wanting to attack me.

I think it’s perfectly logical to conclude that someone who thinks it’s ok to racially abuse someone in public in 2019 wouldn’t think twice about reacting violently to someone who confronts them about it. To equate the OP with racists is beyond ridiculous.

This is a fair and reasonable way to deal with it.
I've got no place on this board really

In all honesty someone witnessing stuff like that should take a note of their seat number and where the abuse is coming from in relation to it. Leave their seat and report it to a police officer or steward and go back to their seat and let them deal with it.

And all the above is what you should do without question or hesitation. If you want this shit eradicated from games and society in general then make it happen, don’t rant afterwards on a forum. Deal with it.

I was completely bemused, if any other smb members something I have been a member of since around 1999 were sat amongst this merry band of nutters feel free to voice your concerns, i was right behind the goal in row k
Were there any stewards in that end?

A forum is a place to rant about it tbf. People are wary of confronting situations and mobs. Talking about ways to deal with things can help. We've all stood back and ignored things said, for a multitude of reasons. I've done it myself and I'm a 17 stone, bald meathead, built like Mike Tyson .

I've made a conscious decision after England's match in Bulgaria to do something about it if I see it, either asking them to stop, or reporting them.

It is to a sense yeah but a bit barn door, it’s all trousers and no action. Make a difference at source is the only remedy, only then will society really change. I’m more of the George Forman build (not the grill) slightly meaner, leaner & younger.😉
Would you like me to pm a price list?
:)

😁😁😁 I believe this SOT, I once caught a tv program where this gonk paid a fluzzy a couple of hundred quid to come and use a nutmeg grater on his bollocks. She proclaimed he was a regular( well every 2-3months it took to heal) so your rent a gash to slash menu I do believe.😁

It was about 1987 when it started to ease off :(
I think SAFC fans as always been a tame level headed bunch when attending games.Im not saying people don’t say stupid stuff but it must be very very isolated as we are a good bunch which has never really had much of a hooligan scene in my lifetime .Non existent really .

Stewards are there for a reason. Doing absolutely nothing when you're aware of it is mad
What a nasty post.

Should just leave him/herself vulnerable to attack, should he/she?

Couldn't tell a steward?

I always find the response to these kinds of threads a little bizarre. "I didn't hear it so I don't believe it".

Not everyone feels comfortable challenging it at the time either. You've no idea what the reaction will be, 9 times out of 10 it'd be verbal but there's always the chance you'd end up with your face smacked in.

I've heard it at the SoL, it's usually an individual who thinks they are hilarious. One lad who had a SC few rows behind who every game (and I mean every) would sit and reel off a constant tirade of racism against Yorke, Nosworthy and Jones. After getting fed up and telling him to shut up it had no effect, so passed it on to a steward who said they were already aware.

I can see how doing nothing at all is unhelpful, obviously. Type of attitude and behaviour has no place anywhere never mind a football ground and needs dealing with either one way or the other.
