there's a bit about it in the daily mirror

"fans ejected mistakenly at Shrewsbury game'

"man was eating fish and chips an wife said pass the plastic knife stanley and stanley said which one the black one or the white one

I don't go to as many games as I could living in North wales but ventured to todays game today. Some utterly crackers language/baheavour from 50/60 somethings who should know better clearly going to matches for a bit of escapism from general life and vent their right wing frustration on black players... Absolutely disgusting comments from an old fella behind me relating to the shrewsbury centre half and the 2 women next to him continued to rant incoherently for 90 minutes about fantasies relating to stabbing opposition players with a stanley knife. These weren't kids they were middle aged folk, utterly bizarre and shameful.
Granted the result wasnt the best but sunderland shouldve got 3 points today and were very unlucky yet loads of folk shouted abuse at the players for 90 minutes when something didnt come off. I used to love going to games and have had some fond memories over the last 30 years of supporting sunderland... perhaps I was just unlucky with wom I was sat by

what section of my comments are shambolic, do you condone racism?

Did you call them out? Or are you one of those that are only outraged sitting at a keyboard with a story to tell?
Anyone who bottles calling out this kind of behaviour as and when they see it are on equal turf to the perpetrators....it's disgusting

I have not reported them as do not know what the numbers were for certain, I just frowned at them which was poor from my perspective, the trouble is, if you challenge folk, which no one did, you don't know what to expect from others which could lead to violence of some nature.
Whole thing was just very unpleasant.
Cell phone video of the alleged incident would do wonders.

This is very true. It happened to me in the SoL about 10 years ago when I tackled a racist.

I did report it to the club though and the bloke was banned. He admitted to carrying out an ‘unprovoked attack’ but denied the racist abuse directed to WBA’s Darren Moore. Sadly not one supporter (in the family section/ concession corner) backed me up. it’s easier to stay quiet and pretend it’s not happening

There was a woman going mental at the steward/security stood just behind the goal at the end of the game. No idea what triggered it but thought she was going to throw a left hook at one point. The security bloke just looked a bit bemused. I thought she must either be off her face or something fairly serious had gone on.

Stabbing players with a Stanley Knife?????? What the fuck, you slash things with a Stanley Knife, did all of this really happen?

Did anyone else witness or hear/see this?

In all honesty someone witnessing stuff like that should take a note of their seat number and where the abuse is coming from in relation to it. Leave their seat and report it to a police officer or steward and go back to their seat and let them deal with it.

He's quoting someone. Don't see why he'd make it up.

And those criticizing him for not doing anything in the ground don't know the situation (as don't I). If you've got five big fellas behind you it's different from having a word with a 17 year old on his own, unfortunately.

I dont know why he would make it up. And I also realise it can be tricky at times to blow the whistle

Dont be so f***ing condescending, I have probably been in situations that would scare the shit out of you

Absolute nonsense. You have absolutely no idea how someone is going to react so some people may feel very intimidated at the thought. I called out some lads on a bus a few years ago doing monkey chants at passers by and one of them ran the length of the bus wanting to attack me.

I think it’s perfectly logical to conclude that someone who thinks it’s ok to racially abuse someone in public in 2019 wouldn’t think twice about reacting violently to someone who confronts them about it. To equate the OP with racists is beyond ridiculous.

This is a fair and reasonable way to deal with it.

The bit about Stanley knives and women is hard to believe. Not in 50 years have I heard anything like that at a match
Could the reference to the Stanley knives not have been a reference to the disabled Sunderland female supporters getting her coat slashed. A photo which I believe was posted online by the Hebburn branch showed the slashed coat.

Agree with this. There's a lot of people who love to comment things like "easy to do from behind a keyboard, you should have said it to their face". Of course they're saying it from behind a keyboard as well, it makes them sound as if they'd take no shit but in reality they'd probably say nowt as well.

The fact is that most people seek to avoid violent confrontation. The idea of turning round to a group of probably pissed/ coked up lads to tell them to stop what they're doing doesn't greatly appeal to most due to the high possibility of getting cracked in the face. You're much better just reporting it to the stewards and hoping that others will do the same to back your story up, and then hope they deal with it in the right way. It doesn't sound as macho like but there's nowt wrong with taking that approach rather than going around causing confrontation with people who are likely just looking for an excuse to kick off
