Quality of the Premier League

So that's Brentford and Palace sorted; Leeds have a go at teams and have been one of the most entertaining sides to watch; Brighton play some excellent football; Watford have a go in attack but struggle to balance that defensively; Southampton play with two up top; Leicester are usually a decent watch; Spurs, Chelsea and Arsenal can be entertaining and/or show real quality; Man City and Liverpool are two of the best sides you'll see.

I'm struggling to see how your point is being proven really. Personally, I find West Ham boring and found Wolves dull under Santo, but even they've improved now. Burnley are different, then there's Newcastle and Villa who are improving under Gerrard and that's about your lot.

Which teams are you basing your views on?
Norwich and the mags.

I don't know about average quality but certainly more dominant teams. In 1992 the top 2 achieved 13.5% of available points, by the 2018-19 season it was 19% and it sits at 16.6% for this season. For the top 4 it was 25.7% in 1992 and upto 33% in 2081-9.

Meanwhile at the bottom in 1992 the bottom 3 had 12.6% of points, this season it is at 6.8%.

I barely watch the Prem these days.

The days of different types of teams which made it more exciting are long gone. Most teams outside of the top 6 cancel each other out because the coaches all go on the same courses and the players are all clones of each other..

The money involved makes games cagey, defensive and dull. There’s usually one or two good games a week but there’s not many that stick in the memory.

Brighton have scored about 25 goals all season man

I didn’t watch that to be fair, Burnley are sometimes a difficult watch but they play to their strengths
They get the ball in the box at every opportunity and play 2 up front, a bit like Stone used to. It’s something different to watch rather than 1 up front or a false 9.

So you didn't celebrate the great escape under Poyet?
You were Disapointed when BSA kept us up and sent the mags down?
You were relieved when Moyes took us down?

Of course not. Every supporter wants their team to win on the day. Those were good days, but that’s all they were. Good days in generally awful, turgid seasons within a generally awful, turgid decade.

I fully appreciate that some people pine for the days when we got to make up the numbers for the top 6/7 clubs, in a League increasingly designed for and by them. I’m just not one of those people.

On the point re Moyes/relegation - was I actively hoping to see us out of the Prem by then? Yes, I was. I was totally fed up with it by then.

They've gone on a good run, it happens. They've got 34 pts from 31 games.. League isn't any different to previous years.
No different to previous years?

This season there is every chance that 31 or 32 points will be enough to stay up.

Contrast that with us being the first team to go down on 40 points (under Peter Reid).

But aye, it's no different...

But if we're just an established Championship club, which is what you want, surely we'll be just making up the numbers in there.

Making up the numbers for who? Were we ever really an “established” Premier League club for any length of time? Does a team constantly scrapping in the bottom six ever get established?

Absolutely on its arse isn't it?

I remember when we were in there and I could watch two random bottom half sides on sky and it was decent. These days it's never a decent game, quality is on the floor and boring.

Most competitive league in the world, probably aye. But there's much better entertainment in numerous European leagues.

When I'm home, if Sunderland are away or my dad's not up to it. We go to random Northern League games. In terms of entertainment for a neutral fan, it's leagues ahead of the Premier League.

OK there's a lot less skill. But there's a lot more skill than people expect.

But its ENTERTAINING! There's hard tackles, determination, there's players out to prove a point, theres dubious decisions and things to talk about afterwards. I reckon I've left 80% of NL games feeling I've been entertained or at least had value for money.

In the professional game I reckon it's 20% at best.

I enjoy going to the match now more than I did in at least 80% of the time we spent in the Prem.

I understand that some people see the Prem on TV now and miss it, but I’m just not one of those people.

Money drives the game. This in turn forces teams with less of it to be negative keeping skill levels hidden.

If they could get that right theyd be a very good side. They play some lovely stuff
He's a good manager him like. And they are a decent wide to watch. I think it's canny atm to see the likes of ManU, Chelsea, Arsenal and Spurs scrambling around desperately just to get 4th. Be nice to see a few of them miss out.

It's all about opinions mate but I never thought I'd read anything like that today.
