Pope replaces Malan for second test

Pope is a right hander. Wonder if that influenced the selection at all, given how the lefties struggle against Ashwin

Some of us showing our knowledge again saying call up pope:cool:

He's only averaged 16since the Ashes
Oh, not disagreeing with it, just quite brutal to select him for the 1st test of a 5 match series and drop him after 2 failures. Probably should have dropped him after the Pakistan series

We need to be patient with Pope and Curran hopefully they are consistent straight away but they are only 20

No arguments here, Malan is not an international quality cricketer. We need to find more young batsmen that are up to the job.

Curran has had a storming start but he will have a dip at some point, He needs to figure out a plan B when the ball isn't swinging. I like the kid a lot though, he has the sort of Gough/Cork attitude, "DogFuck" as Fletcher used to call it.
Don't know anything about Pope, but agree he needs time. I wonder if now is the time to move Bairstow to 4 and give Buttler the gloves?

Cook, Jennings, Root, Bairstow, Pope, Buttler (W), Woakes, Curran, Rashid, Broad, Anderson

With Stokes replacing Woakes for the 3rd test.

Bloody hell. 3 specialist batsmen. 3 wicketkeepers and 5 bowlers. It's a funny old game.

Best of luck to Pope, kudos to Smith for being proactive.

Wonder if Stokes can be drafted back in should the court case end/be adjourned?

Moeen will play at Lords ahead of Woakes IMO

You must have missed all the games outside Australia he was minging in. Averages 20 in England and 12 at Lord's.
Didn't say I don't agree with the change (see previous posts) I'm just surprised that it's one test and out for Malan. Yes he's on a bad run, but the last test was over 2 months ago and this series felt like a fresh start. Fair dos, hope Pope smashes it

Jennings started off as an all rounder for us

I'd be more amenable to him getting a clean slate if he'd dealt with his technical weakness of planting his front foot too early, getting closed off and caught out by in swing or seam.

Also dropping three slip catches won't have helped his chances whatsoever

Agree. For me, he was never more than a 1 or 2 year stop gap. At his age, with his technical flaws he was never going to be a long term solution. Hope Pope is the man (boy)

Wow. Pretty brutal from Ed Smith. One test and out for Malan.

The need for more right-handers is clear.

No problem with that, I reckon Livingstone would have been in if he hadn't knacked his thumb.

Pope is much better, statistically. I'm excited to have a look at him, Alec Stewart reckons he's the best Surrey have ever had at his age.

Yeop. It's a f***ing bunsen burner. Jadeja will be in for them too.
