Pop Recs - Supporting Local Gigs

As has been suggested in another thread, let’s have a thread where we can tell each other specifically about events & gigs Pop Recs are putting on.

For those of you that don’t know, it’s a cracking little venue on High Street West, just on the edge of the town. I’ve been to a couple of gigs, Michael Head & Steve Mason where they’ve stopped mid gig & commented on what a fantastic venue it is.

There’s been a little bit of concern that certain events dint get the right exposure, between us we can let each other know, in a similar way the Fire Station thread works.

Anyhow, the two coming up I’m aware of is the Chameleons on 24th July & Fire Doors on 13th December.

@thecookingwine
Already got my chameleons tickets. Saw them twice last year, tremendous.

Good post. Their comms are pretty poor like regarding gigs. Echobelly played a matinee there the other week and there seemed very little plugging of it thro their channels. Still sold out like so no harm done there but maybe other gigs don't sell so well?
I think they only really post on Facebook, don't have a website and use a service to sell tickets.

The first gig of the first tour for this excellent initiative will be at The Independent.

"This is the first tour to be funded by the which was created by MVT and live music advocates Save Our Scene (SOS) to distribute funding directly to grassroots venues, artists, and promoters with financial support raised by contributions from arena and stadium ticket sales."

Cheers for this lads n lasses. To give you a brief run down if you're not in the know;

"Pop Recs is a Community Interest Company based in the heart of Sunderland, this basically means we're not for profit and exist to enrich cultural and artistic activities in the City.

Founded in 2013, as a 'pop up shop' it quickly became an arts/cultural and social space. We occupied various locations across the city before moving to our current home at High Street West, Sunniside in November 2021. Pop Recs is driven by community values with an overarching principle to culturally enrich the lives of the people living in its community by providing activities for the community. These include local employment and volunteering opportunities in line with our core activities; Café, 220 capacity music venue and community space.

Our café has gained a reputation in the city and region for the quality food and beverage offer homemade brunch style dishes, house made bread and specialty coffee served 6 days a week. These commercial activities help sustain Pop Recs and subsidise the wider community offer."

Pop is essentially run by myself and Micheal from The Heartstrings and we employ 6 people in on a full time basis. I'm also involved with the Bridge Hotel Vaults and the upcoming food offer in the adjacent unit on Sunderland St. Between Pop Recs and The Bridge we're working hard, with the Likes of Sunshine Co-op, to establish something cool down on our end of High St West.

I'll keep dropping in here and will put up a bit of a listings post tonight or tomorrow.

Cheers for the support!

I probably only concentrate on the gigs but, but I’m aware you do lots of community stuff that probably doesn’t get the recognition it deserves.

She must have a high opinion of herself to have a go at someone 'leering'

She's laughing if Yvette Fielding ever needs a ringer.

Clueless.
Quite the awkward gig though as the female lead singer went through a poor guy who was standing at the front, in her words leering at her, but he was probably just enjoying the music in his way. Funny one.
If you have a look in the Forthcoming Gigs thread, there was quite a bit of discussion about this and the bloke she wrongly called out.

It's true - we're a really small team (two of us, basically) but always trying to make things better.
Welcome onto this thread then. We will try and promote pop recs here as there's quite a few who like it and want it to do well. :cool:

If you could look at offering some gluten free options for us 2 in every 100 coeliacs I will eat at the cafe! The coffee is lovely but nothing I can eat. Just a suggestion. Thank you.

I read the other thread, and the lad she had a go at does a lot for the music scene. She seems to have badly misjudged the situation...

Maybe she was wrong, and should apologise but none of that excuses your well she's not that hot so no one could have leered at her, she should get over herself creepy bullshit.
Gruff Rhys has a new album coming out so might be a possible.
Fond memories of a great Gruff gig in the Fawcett Street Poprecs - was his daughter or his wife's birthday the day of the gig and he phoned her mid-gig so everyone could say happy birthday.
This is the kit :cool:
Surprised me that, as there didn't seem many empty seats last time they played at the FireStation. Good on PopRecs though.
