Points needed to stay up

It’s all down to West Ham. If they fall away or could be 32 points needed, if they kick on from 2 great results and are inspired through to May it could get to 40.

We aren’t not going to get 7 points from 15 games.

What we should be focusing on is keeping the momentum up and finishing as high up as possible that really does matter. We want as few of any of our better players having their heads turned in the summer, coming 16th and falling away badly over 3/4 of the season in doing that is a real concern for me that the squad breaks up. Yes we’d get some decent money but investing it is never easy. I’d much prefer to go on an exciting journey with this squad for 2-3 years, the foundations are there.

We are easily going to get 7 points

I think the "strength in depth" doesnt apply to Burnley and Wolves. Its the reality that Leeds are on course for 44 on ppg basis, Forest more like 41 - but they've improved, beyond that we're down to a bottom three. If West Ham randomly win loads of games and hit a winning formula then theres nobody obvious to take their place in the bottom 3.

Its all moot anyway - I'm sure Sunderland will be continuing to play and try and compete for every point regardless.
Crystal Palace are in free fall at the moment. They were 4th 8 games ago but since then only got 2 points. They've lost Guehi, possibly Mateta and the manager will probably end up being booted but it could be too late to stop the rot

It’s absolutely pathetic and a massive overreaction.

Imagine thinking 42 points will be needed to stay up

The current bottom 3 are averaging below a point a game, West Ham will need to win 7 games in 15 to get near 41 points, they’ve won 5 games all season.
You get points for draws and like I said before, form doesn't always last all season.

West Ham could get 41 points with W6 D3 L6 and they've got 6 'winnable' games. All they need is to pull off a shock win or two and it would make it more realistic. It's clear they've improved recently. Is it because Paqueta isn't playing and leaving part of this potential turnaround?

All said and done, we're not getting relegated as it's the Palace fans who will be worried the most. Bournemouth were also in a bad spell but seem to have pulled some good results recently to ease the nerves.

Is this the bed wetters thread?

No, I've interpreted the OP as general interest in the drop zone, not about us.
Just to make sure, I asked google AI: "Will Sunderland get relegated this season?" and here's their authoritative answer.

Based on their performance in the first half of the 2025/26 season, it is highly unlikely that Sunderland will get relegated. Despite pre-season predictions suggesting an 80% chance of relegation, they have performed exceptionally well, sitting securely in mid-table (13th or higher) and staying well clear of the relegation zone as of early January 2026.

The conditions for a 40 point relegated team are almost but not quite in place this season . All you need in an unusually large middle tier : i.e. those teams not in the title race and not tailed off hopeless cases. We currently have 14 teams separated by 13 points ( Man U in 4th to Forest in 17th) , upwards movement within that group can be rapid if any team can string together wins.
Currently we have a tailed off bottom three but West Ham are fighting ( were they good or were we bad on Saturday ?)
Say West Ham continue to pick up points and catch Forest then we'd have a mid tier that extended all the way down into 18th place. Forest are currently on course for 41 points. In this scenario the worst of the middling teams would be relegated on 40+ points.

Lose against Burnley and it will be
How on earth do you make that out? There's a 13 point gap between Sunderland and West Ham. If we get absolutely absolutely zero points it would take West Ham 4 wins and a draw just to level up. A minimum of 5 games.

They play Chelsea, Man Utd, Burnley, Bournemouth, Liverpool, Fulham, Man City, Aston Villa as their next 8 games. That takes them to 31 games.

Burnley and Bournemouth are absolute must win for them, and then realistically they have get points from some of the others as well.

Even if we don't pick up a single point in the next 8 games, West Ham would probably struggle to catch us from those games. They're not getting 13 points from that lot, and we definitely won't get zero either.

Wolves are likely to pick up a fair few more points than earlier in the season given their recent form. That will force the points required total down. Burnley are on a terrible run of winless games but they are drawing a few. I suppose it depends largely on the 3rd bottom team but that could be anyone of 4 or 5 sides. In summary totally up in the air 😂
