Places you felt most on edge in your life

Great place, especially the old town. A real Eastern Bloc feel to the place and for 60p a pint I'd definitely like to go back. I stayed next to the train station though, which was a little less desirable!
Ah yes, we came in from Poland and the train station was miles away from the Old Town.

Marseille Harbour on the afternoon of the England v Russia game.

It was micey as out, got locked inside a bar away from the hooligans trying to get in from the outside. We were having a pint at one point when we thought it had calmed down abit and Russians appeared out of nowhere braying anyone in sight. We had to walk up the ground as they had stopped the trains due to the violence, that was pretty scary.

Dunno how @WCC managed it as he was sitting by himself on the other side of the ground, seperated by the Russian end.

The train in from Poland was interesting too. Border checks with the Ukraine military wandering up and down the carriages. The walk in to the old town from the station was nice to be honest, once you got away from the hustle and bustle of the station/market area.

The Garths in the late 80's. Marley Potts in the late 80's.
Both like Beirut.

Back streets of Barbados. Got followed by a gang of locals at 3am after we had just been kicked out of a US army base. Had no idea where we were and I was the only bloke in our group of 5.

Was thinking about this earlier that although there are some grim parts of the North East theres nowhere that I've ever felt particularly in danger which is something we often take for granted.

The only 2 places I've ever been where I've genuinely been totally on edge are:

Once stayed with a friend in Manor Park for a week, I hear its improved a bit now but was like something from Top Boy at the time.

Only topped by a suburb of Istanbul that I once ended up in after getting lost. Advised by a local to leave quickly.

Thats the only 2 for me although I imagine most of these sorts of places you'd never have a reason to visit unless you lived there. My mate who's done a lot of travelling in Europe reckons the worst he's seen was a suburb in North Paris which was like armageddon.

Interested to know what other peoples experiences have been
Lots of hostile places. NI, Banja Luka (Bosnia) and ironically Nicosia which should have been a straightforward summer UN tour ended up an absolute shit show when the Turks decided to start shooting protesters and our troops.

Yeah, it was a really modern train, the one from Krakow to the border was awful though.

We went in Winter, bloody freezing.

I should add to that another place that should not have been hostile. Newcastle Central Station main platform on return from the Hearts friendly when NP decided to kettle us and then started pistil whipping us with their batons for singing football songs. How nobody died that day is still a shock.

Many a place in this country following Sunderland away in the 70’s and early 80’s. Police if any didn’t give a f#ck, no cctv, no cushy escorts but we always had a laugh. Often wonder how the f#ck we’re still here today to tell the tale.

an old job used to take me to some of London’s finest estates. I was surveying the Gloucester Grove Estate at the time Damilola Taylor was murdered. It was awful, just a sense of dread and fear. The staining from his blood wasn’t properly cleaned from the stairwell either. Horrendous. Other estates had the same feeling of utter dread too. The Mozart, Willow Tree Lane, South Kilburn estates are horrific. Used to get on site and do the work at around 7am so i could be off the estates by 10/11am.

Dubai, by the creek was dodgy on foot and totally unexpected.

Downtown Miami and New Orleans, literally just one wrong turn from very dodgy people and areas.

Ciudad del Este, in Pargauy.
Ah yes, I've been there. The most lawless city in South America I do believe. We had a factory there. They had metal gates, the security guard had a gun and the MD's car windows were bullet proof. They put me in a hotel over the border in Iguazu Falls in Brazil. We also had a factory in Valencia. Venezuela and that was worse. I wasn't allowed out of the hotel on my own. The sad thing was the lads who set the factory up said it used to be lovely but that was before Chavez came in and the country descended into a lawless mess - don't tell Corbyn though cos he thinks its a socialist paradise.

No it wasn't football related, it was just the fact that I was a lone stranger, at night, obvoiusly didn't have a clue where I was, and was running into groups of local characters. Just felt like it could get a bit leary any moment. I've been in some strange places all over the world, and it hasn't bothered me at all. This just felt a bit wrong
That end of town was always a bit like that, some choice characters

How the fook can you end up in Harehills from Elland rd?

We were in a transit and somebody thought it would be a laugh to get out there and annoy the locals
To be fair I'd take either of these areas as a place to live over the area around Elland Road.

When chaps of a different er religion start running down the street at you with machetes it’s a little bit hair raising.

Bangkok. Been to a massive night market then had a fair few beers. Staggered about a bit and then got into a tuk-tuk and told the lad where I though me hotel was. He hammered the engine and took off. Then he’s swigging from a bottle of what I think was vodka and then tries to light a massive spliff. At the same time as driving. Then he turns into a one way street and plays chicken with oncoming cars. Eventually gets to me hotel and I paid him. I have never been so thankful to be alive. Was like something out of James Bond!

Not many places outside warzones tbh. I do tend to cut about like Denholm Elliot on that street in Indiana Jones and the last crusade mind.

NYC - I'd done a bit of research, before I traveled, to find an Adidas shop. Turns out it was well off the beaten track. Bought a pair of trainers and then needed to find our way back, just me and the Mrs. I wanted to get the bus as I wanted to see as much as i could of the place, rather than be stuck underground. Time felt like it stopped as we waited at the bus stop, and not one bus stopped! We stood out like a sore thumb as tourists. Locals just going about their business, except these 2 lads on bikes who kept going past us staring every time. We both decided the subway was the best way back.

Lviv - Day before the Champions League Final in Kiev. I'd traveled over on my own as my mates went on a coach! Stayed in a hostel in Lviv the night before. I could tell it was a bit moody where I was staying but it was daylight and loads of people about. I went out for some food and drinks and then headed back to the hostel after dark. Saying i was glad to get back in my room alive would be an understatement.

I was in that Addidas shop in NYC a few weeks back if it’s the one on w Houston st. Some rough people hanging around. Lots of homeless folks dragging their shit about and groups of lads on street corners. Got a few shouts at me and Mrs c as it was mainly a black and Chinese area. We stood out. 1 block back and it was Uber trendy shops. Very weird
