Patto

He`s average, no more no less. Whilst he is ok, I do think its one of the positions we could improve and would definately need to if we went up

This. Patterson is absolutely fine for where we are now as a club.

If, however, we were to be promoted I think we’d need better or certainly a premier league experienced keeper for competition.

Speakman said on selling Clarke and Stewart was that as players their personal development had outgrown the club. That works both ways - if the club are suddenly playing at a level which is too good for players they should be replaced.

Statistically and to the naked eye, he's a bog standard middle of the road Championship GK at the moment, no more and no less.

He's obviously still very young for a GK in terms of age, but with approx 150 appearances under his belt now at the club across L1 and the Championship, I think it's fair to say he probably hasn't developed as much or as quickly as we would have hoped at this point.

He's a very canny shot stopper, however, the main elephant in the room is that his distribution currently is nowhere near good enough for a side who want to play out and build up from the back.

He's the one regular in the squad who if we got a decent offer for, I'd be pretty happy to cash in on. I think we could sign a similar standard GK for far less money and use the rest to improve the squad as a whole.

I know there's lots of paper talk etc about how PL clubs are interested in him, but in the modern game where at that level your GK is expected to act as an extra outfielder (with few exceptions) with the ball, personally I can't see him playing at that level unless his distribution improves dramatically for a start.

All that said, I wouldn't be blaming him for the Plymouth equaliser. The biggest error in that passage of play for me was O'Nien "clearing" the ball straight down the centre!

Interestingly, David Preece (who has forgotten more about goalkeeping than any of us know) has the same view in that Patterson can't be blamed for the goal.

Patterson does seem a little chunky, really needs to get his diet and fitness in line, I knows it’s only GK but still want to be as mobile as possible. Also the real fault for that second goal was the TWO players in the attackers face who couldn’t block a cross

My biggest worry about Patto is he doesn't seem to be improving. As he gets older and the players in the squad are of higher ability and improving, he seems to at best levelled out, or at worst, slightly regressed. Certainly wouldn't be dropping him mind, but might be an area to improve in the summer.

Fact is we were all over the place defensively on Saturday and were fortunate to get a draw. They had another 3 or 4 top notch chances aside from their goals. Hopefully we get it right and move forward again.

He's an average keeper with below average distribution.

A top keeper can be worth a great deal of points over a season, like in the cases of Burnley and Stoke this season.

Statistics don’t absolutely prove anything though. What if the type of shots faced were much more saveable than others? It’s not an exact science and the only way it could be proved is by highly complex speed, distance and accuracy ratios. It also doesn’t take into account positional mistakes which is one of his biggest issues.

In layman’s terms I could be an amazing goalkeeper but face 10 unsaveable shots in a game and look terrible statistically . On the flip side I could be a shocking keeper and make 15 very simple saves and look amazing on statistics. Those of us who watch Patto weekly know he’s been very poor positionally and at distributing the ball this season

That's where the Xg and goals prevented stats come in.

Patterson has prevented -0.04 goals this season in the league, meaning he's letting in pretty much what he's expected to on averaged.

Stoke's keeper has prevented 10.5

I like Patto me, I think he is good for this level. He has weaknesses in his game where he needs to improve but I'm fine with young players learning on the job unless it is clearly not working / they need taking out the firing line (like Jobe at times last season)

I think Stoke and Sheff Utd have a better number 1 than Patto but after that I'm struggling at this level.

Well unless Burnley have van dijk and saliba playing centre half I’d suggest Trafford is aswell
