Patrick Roberts to Birmingham compendium

I don’t know if he’ll leave before Monday night but I think this season will be his last at the club.

If we’ve aspirations of improving across the board we need more productive players than Roberts both in the side and on the fringes of the first eleven.

His lack of productivity just defines his time here and we can’t ignore it anymore.

People must watch a different game to me, I agree with the poster he had a very poor game. He usually always cuts inside and gets dispossessed. I’ve never seen him skin a fullback and run to the byline and make a good cross, bog standard winger stuff. His shooting is woeful, blast over the bar or powder puff to the goalie. This was Huddersfield league 1 reserves he was playing last night

“Getting down the line” doesn’t appear to be part of the modern day game. Look at Grealish at city , Jack Clark for us , Roberts, Mundle , it’s all inverted wingers cutting inside and passing sideways our backwards. Pep has a lot to answer for.
We have players with pace to play on the break but getting crosses into the box is not part of our set up. It’s not just us , look at a lot of teams, winger had the ball , there’s rarely anybody in the box is, it’s all about playing through the middle. Not that I’m a fan mind , but that’s my take on it.

Agree , but so has Gooch and look where he was last night. Time to thank Roberts and move him on.
yeah I agree but even doku goes down the line now and crosses. Salah’s fault

Unbelievable the amount of possession he had 2nd half only for it to come to nowt bar one clever through ball.He could easily play 2-3 games in the PL and not get that much and whats going to be the end product against superior opposition.

I really like him, but agree here.

Also wouldn't be shocked to see Southampton coming back in for him now they've lost Dibling.

Yes. When has Roberts ever looked good on the left? The answer is never. Was a total waste of time.
I can't remember him ever playing on the left. But what is wrong with the idea of a winger playing on his natural side in order to get more crosses in? As we all know he can't cross on his right and always cuts inside - which every opponent surely knows too.

He wasn’t awful. They were all awful first half, he was one of the better players in the second. There were a lot of poor decisions and touches last night. You might as well post a thread for all of the players saying the same thing.

Its actually scary when you look at his output statistically... Towards the top end for touches, ball carrying etc... then when you look at shooting its beyond dreadful, average at best in terms of putting balls in/getting it to good areas and he doesn't win free kicks either for how good he is with the ball. Just beyond frustrating

I would never claim he is the complete player but possession is a pretty important stat.
The pressure he takes off a team under the cosh is not to be underestimated, he frightens defenders.
He is going to be an asset off the bench this season.
His cameo at Wembley was the catalyst to us winning

Not disputing his cameo or his ability to get us up the pitch. But the vast majority of the time we'll be behind on 70 mins in the PL and requiring a goal or an assist.1 in 50 and one in 6+ in the championship doesn't exactly bring inspiration.

I like him when he's direct but other than his end product he's very predictable. Better players than last night will have him sussed after 5 mins

It doesn’t work. He’s tried it before. You could see within 10-15 minutes it wasn’t working

No he wasn't. He caused them all sorts of problems.

Not everything's going to come off, yet he continues to attack defenders and never gives up.

He scored a quality penalty too under more pressure than most considering he missed his last one.
I like him.
He tries to make things happen, plays the difficult pass, tries to take on players and has the skill to do it.
Would rather have players who aren't scared to lose the ball by trying things than just playing safe all the time.

Spot on.
