Overrated Test Cricketers

In what sense?

His average is low in comparison to other top batsmen, however I'd argue its massively skewed by playing in a poor era.
100% this. If you had to choose a batsman to bat for your life, Athers would be in the top 2 or 3
Sub-40 average but that doesn't tell the full story
Watched every ball of his 185* v South Africa and it wasn't until August of this year that I saw a better test innings
Ricky Ponting was not overrated like!

He was a class act
Ponting probably gets into the All Time XI of Test cricket

Ian Bell...never perfirmed when it really mattered but lauded by some.
Michael Vaughan
Good player for England but he gets made out to be a great he wasn’t

Constantly getting bowled, his average shows where abouts he was
Superb capt.

Mike Gatting. Benefitted from being a Middlesex lad and not the most athletic.

Found wanting when the going got tough, especially against the Aussies and the Windies. Not that good at playing quicker bowlers off the end of his nose either.

My immediate thought. Seemed to get out a lot whilst not even playing a shot
Kept Derek Randall out of the team iirc when the latter was in form

Captained a winning ashes team down under and hardly anyone was 'athletic' during that era.
