England havent played with a player of Cattermoles ilk since Hoddles England with Ince/Batty.

He doesn't suit the system Hodgson wants to play. To replace Gerrard in that system, Huddleton and Cork are much better fits, they take care of the ball well. Cattermole is the best combative midfielder in that list but we don't play combative midfieders in Englands system.

He is way down the list in that he doesn't suit Hodgsons system and he hasn't played well for long enough. If he carrys on his form until Easter fair play but he hasn't played well for 6 consecutive games yet.

Hodgson's system brought about 1 point from 3 games in the world cup which equates to abject failure in my book. If he doesn't take steps to protect a weak back four we'll continue to fail as a team. You can't concede 2 goals regularly and expect to win many games.

Woy failed badly at Liverpool and is heading the same way with England. Let's be honest he only got the job cos he hadn't been on a dodgy tax charge like Harry. Getting our usual lucky draws and beating also rans in qualification is just papering over glaring cracks. If he sticks to the same mindless attacking tactics we're just fooling ourselves. We need to build a team that can defend first.

You are right in everything you say, still he isn't any where near consistent .... yet.

The lad hasn't played well near enough for Sunderland to deserve an England call up. Secondly, I don't believe he has the technique to be a success at International level.

love the way catts is playing lately and people have been called up for less (especially from top 4 teams), however its only two games so far, id like to see players really earn a call up with consistency

Catts played umpteen games for the under 21's and did well. Possession is important at international level but so is stopping the other team playing. Pirlo took the piss and we seemed to have no plan to stop him before or even during the game.

As far as consistancy goes I would say he's been consistently good for about the last 6 months. He made a mistake in January and was poor twice down Hull. We missed him badly when Gus was resting him for the cup and playing Bridcutt instead.

In all the big games, semi and final and league run in he was an inspiration IMO. His sort of desire and leadership is sadly lacking with England.

So would he shine for England or one of the top nations?

Cattermole would not shine for England. He's not technically good enough to shine at that level. I'm sure you already understood that when people refer to International Class they are referring to players that excel at that level.
Im not saying hes Maradona but for me other than the mental meltdowns which he seems to have got under control right now(fingers crossed) his Achilles heel is a lack of pace, but he ticks most of the boxes. Again im not saying id pick him but I definitely believe the majority of SAFC fans underrate him. Fans of other teams on the whole think hes rock solid. People underestimate the intangibles like desire, workrate, intensity and leadership. Hes outplayed Yaya Toure and others whilst playing for Sunderland. How many international midfields are better than Man City? Yes he has bad games but he doesn't get much help. I can guarantee you one thing he would run through a brick wall for England. He does it for us every week.
