October 2020 - Getting worse across Europe.

The problem of course being the stupid way politicians in many EU currents conveyed the message. A lot of People will not want the AZ vaccine no matter what the data.
The sensible approach would have been to say that data so far shows the Pfizer is more effective on over 65 s so whilst waiting for further data then over 65 s will receive the Pfizer. Not we have banned AZ for over 65s.
I think that there will be enough people (under 65's) in Europe who will accept the AstraZeneca vaccine after seeing the real time data from Scotland and England in the last week, despite the shite way some governments conveyed the message. There should be plenty of the other vaccines for those that are reluctant once the manufacturers get the supply up to speed.
Is Switzerland medical regulator still saying it cannot authourise the use of AstraZenca at all due to insufficient data ?

Yesterday germany, italy, france and spain, Poland and numerous others were looking in a more precarious place than the uk.

We should just concentrate in getting our shit together first (which we clearly are with the way the vaccine rollout is going.)
Cancel all flights in/out the country (except for life and death situations), until other countries get their shit together.
And start helping so called less developed/poorer nations with vaccine supply/rollout.

Flights are cancelled from area's the govt thinks are risky.Took them nearly a year to do it mindya.

Anecdotal but it seemed that those that had had covid previously may be the ones that react the most.. many medical staff I imagine may well have had covid
Myself and two friends had Covid and been vaccinated...all of us have been fatigued for weeks. Could be coincidence but same joint pain also.

Agree apart from the last bit. Lets make sure we are covered before giving supplies away. Every man and his dog had the option to pre-order vaccine. We took the gamble, others didnt

Agreed. They should’ve been banned worldwide from the start of it all, until probably the end of 2021.
Possibly the governments biggest mistake in this whole pandemic.

That’s kinda what I was implying with the first sentence.
Although personally, I feel anyone in a more fortunate position should always try and help those in a less fortunate one.
We should at least be in discussions, and planning, on how we’ll do this.

Oh fuck me, thats going to give a certain poster from Ireland on here a bit of a dilemma if this becomes more widespread. He/she is pinning their hopes on this one. Its f***ing madness at times.

Why would it cause a dilemma in Ireland? Abortion is legal in Ireland (and unusually, voted for in a referendum).
AZ getting a hammering in Ireland for their failure to deliver the goods.

Problem was getting PPE and other stuff like ventilators etc. around.

Given the fact the UK has open borders with Ireland if we have any spare we should get them to them asap.

I believe so. Although in Switzerland there is a huge amount of politicians with massive pharma and health insurance vested interests so I wouldn’t be surprised if there are other things beyond “data” driving the decision.

Its being fairly well suppressed at the moment. Its down to about 500 daily cases at the moment from 8K just after xmas. 461 in hopsital and 107 ICU cases (over 200 at the end of January). 25 deaths yesterday (pop. is just under 5 million).

Doesn't sound too bad but the problem comes when you try to ease lockdown without the vaccination numbers too help suppress a surge.

You still don’t understand do u!

Manufacturing vaccine is not a perfect science like manufacturing cars, it’s more like wine, beer and bread, u mix every thing together provide the right environment and let nature take its course but you don’t know what you are going to end up with until the process has over, with wine even if it’s a bad vintage it’s still drinkable but a bad “brew” of vaccine can’t be used and has to be poured down the drain. As such vaccine availability is at best a forecast not a fixed Actuality

With man making wine, beer and bread for thousands of years we’ve become quite good at getting it right more times than not. Vaccine has been at best manufacture for 200 years and in bulk it’s just decades and with the various COVID19 vaccines it’s just weeks and we are still learning how to get it right more times than not. That goes for ALL manufacturers ALL of whom have had delivery problems

When the EU Commissioner said “we under estimated the difficulties of manufacturing vaccines in bulk” “it was a painful lesson to learn” this is what she is referring to. You clearly haven’t learnt that lesson

As result the EU politicians have put absolute reliability on delivery schedules being met unlike the U.K. government who’ve worked on basis of delivery being patchy and unreliable and planned to roll out a vaccination programme accordingly

Politicians will blame the companies for delivery problems as it diverts attention away from their own cock ups, it’s difficult fo us to understand why u can’t grasp this

He understands perfectly, there is literally no scenario where he wouldn’t rather have a pop at the UK regardless of actual validity.

Is that @thehighground ? To be fair to them they did say that the effects were that some people (including medical staff) were being knocked sideways after having the vaccine but were not dying. A read through some of the threads on here regarding the vaccines people have had would suggest that there have been adverse side effects for some people. On an anecdotal level a brother was telling me yesterday about medical staff in Denmark also having problems after having the vaccine, a fair few of those injected were off sick for some days afterwards. This resulted in critical staff shortages in their place of work. I can understand medical staffs reluctance to have the vaccine given that scenario, but "serious" side effects ? No deaths or hospitalisations that I am aware of.

There has been quite a few side effects for quite a few people but none would be described as 'serious'.

Maybe you should email [email protected] and explain all this to him. By the way, he is a medical doctor so he might be able to understand this manufacturing process that you think we can't understand.

You could also maybe email Ursula von der Leyen here

She is also a medical doctor, so there is a good chance she also understand the process.

If you fail with all of them, you could try Angela Merkel has a doctorate in quantum chemistry, so she might get the issues that are involved when creating and manufacturing a vaccine.

Edit: if I was brewing a beer and I had a 60% failure rate in production, I don't think I'd last long in beer brewing.
