I was 7 and watched the game. I had a lot of schoolmates who were Newcastle fans as I went to school in Gateshead. They had us making black and white rosettes using paper plates in school the week before the final. I was pretty neutral about it at the time even though by then I was already a Sunderland fan (I had no choice in that with my three older brothers) and they had taken me to my first game at Roker inbetween the two finals.

The next time they got there I actively celebrated their defeat in the same way I celebrate when their U16's lose a friendly now.

I only watched small bits of the 73 final as I was 6 and was more interested in playing outside at the time.

McDonalds boasting and their fans pitch invasion against Forest in an earlier round whilst losing had all fair minded people nationwide wanting Liverpool to win. He was known in the press as supermac but on Wearside by a rather less woke variant. Plus he was flashing his knackers in the echos misguided mag Wembley feature.

Watched it at home with my Dad and our kid. Oh, how we laughed, and laughed , and laughed. They were totally shite. Hope this helps.
They came out with a 'joke' in 92. "When was the last Sunderland player to touch the ball in a cup final? I will give you a clue it was in the first half". The reply was "when was the last Newcastle player to touch the ball in a cup final? I will give you a clue it was in 1955"

Went to school with a lad that was at the 73 cup final supporting Sunderland and the 74 cup final supporting Newcastle
Turned out he was a mag, think he buggered off to Australia in the end

I remember Alec Lindsey had a goal disallowed for no apparent reason, he was absolutely pissed as a fart being interviewed on Match of the Day that night, so it should have 4-0
The other thing I vividly remember is the Mags had a losers banquet after the match

My dad reckoned it was the worst performance he'd seen at an FA Cup final he'd seen
He saw every final from 1948 onwards so that some record

Its also worth pointing out that as well as the disgraceful Nottm Forest pitch invasion, which my Forest mate still hates Newcastle for and he reckons all Forest fans hate them, they drew 1-1 v non league Hendon in the 3rd round and then drew 1-1 with 4th division Scunthorpe in the 4th round before swinging the Forest match that they were losing by invading the pitch.

Are these the two
Mags love to rewrite history
Wasn’t Alan hull wearing one in stage for lindesfarne before 74
My brother had a safc long sleeved top with 73 FA cup winners on it, he used to wear it to the match the season after the 73 fa cup, I've a picture of us playing footy in the back garden & I've got the top on, it's got 1975 wrote on the back, top was too small for him by then. Mags are full of shit FTM

What did McDonald actually say in the buildup to the final? Seems to be remembered by a lot of people

Me dad said they were hated. He said if you had black and white on anywhere in Sunderland you’d have had your head kicked in.

my uncle who used to play for the mag reserves in the 1960s also said if you saw a black and white scarf in penshaw or shiney raw you’d get your head kicked in also. Hence his utter disgust when he saw someone walking about in Penshaw with a Newcastle top on recently

Aside that the above we were great until the Final 😁
