So you‘re basically saying that John Hall knew that if ran within your means, Newcastle can’t compete with the top clubs. Tell us something we don’t know.

Your good spell/blip 20 odd years ago happened due to spending beyond your means whilst the big boys were rebuilding. I know your debt in those days doesn’t seem like a lot of money now, but it was widely known that Chelsea were days away from administration prior to Abramovich taking over and Newcastle were heading the same way as you weren’t far behind them with the debt. Most mags won’t admit it, but if Ashley hadn’t came along and pumped his money into the club, you could easily have dropped like Leeds and Sunderland.

like I said, mags wont stay up because they are any good

they will stay up because Fulham are shitter

I'm quoting John Hall. There's every chance he's just using that as an excuse to get out, because as you say Chelsea had been bought a few years prior, money was flooding into England, and 2007 really was a boom time for the Premier League globally.

The thing is, we had two 'good spells' the Keegan era, and then a return when Sir Bobby was in charge. You'll hear no argument from me re: Keegan years there was a significant investment in the team. I think we were basically Blackburn with a bigger ground. It didn't quite pan out. The Sir Bobby team was built on investing in quality young players - Dyer, Bellamy, Woodgate - and then leaning on Bobby's knowledge of abroad with guys like Laurent Robert and Olivier Bernard. Like every manager, he got some wrong but the ones he got right were very good.

In that regard, I don't think the two clubs are that different. I'm sure you'd say to me that Sunderland have the potential to be one of the biggest teams in England and should be pushing the top end of the table. I say the same about us.
