Johnson helped put the wheels in motion for it. It was only when he saw which way public opinion was going on it did he u-turn and present a very different public version.I guess for starters if an ESL ever came back up they'd be wanting the government to step in to try and stop it, which they suggested they were prepared to do last time. Pretty powerful ally to have. No doubt plenty of ways the government could make life difficult for the PL as well if they wanted (which they would, if the PL fucked up relations with what is, sadly, a major trading partner)
Is the Premier League not a valuable asset to the country and what that it would be in its interests to keep relatively on side? How could the government make things difficult for them?
These are genuine questions by the way, it’s not meant to sound as arsey as it does.
I know/it’s clear the government leaned on the PL I just don’t understand the mechanism enough to fully get how.
