I guess for starters if an ESL ever came back up they'd be wanting the government to step in to try and stop it, which they suggested they were prepared to do last time. Pretty powerful ally to have. No doubt plenty of ways the government could make life difficult for the PL as well if they wanted (which they would, if the PL fucked up relations with what is, sadly, a major trading partner)
Johnson helped put the wheels in motion for it. It was only when he saw which way public opinion was going on it did he u-turn and present a very different public version.

Is the Premier League not a valuable asset to the country and what that it would be in its interests to keep relatively on side? How could the government make things difficult for them?

These are genuine questions by the way, it’s not meant to sound as arsey as it does.

I know/it’s clear the government leaned on the PL I just don’t understand the mechanism enough to fully get how.

I’m guessing here, but one of the first things they could do would be to impose a regulator on them. I’m certain that would cramp their style

Watched it long before their Mags link and the whole lot are shocking. I can half understand some uneducated daft young un spouting off not knowing what they actually do/did, but anyone else and even more so journalists of all people should hang their head in shame t

Jeff Bezos has an axe to grind with MBS and is supportive of Khashoggi’s partner. If he wants to use SAFC as a spite purchase then that might be ok

He did flip and flop, as he is prone to do, but that doesn't change the fact that the way he flops (that sounds wrong!) could have a huge influence on the PL. Decide that he won't oppose an ESL, decide to impose a tough regulator, hell (he'd never do it like) I guess if he wanted he could tell the PL they had to sell the rights to terrestrial broadcasters, which would cost them shit loads. Any major group like the PL will want the government on side

They want to be very careful about pissing off the mainstream media. If the takeover really is about "sportwashing" and it goes the other way and mainstream media opinion starts highlighting atrocities on a regular basis.... in every report on every game, the Saudis might consider the whole thing to be a waste of time and counter productive.
