Have to remember that Staveley spent months haggling Ashley down from £330m to £300m, and then had to borrow half of her deposit from him (even though she later denied this).

Since they got their feet under the table, Unai Emery has fucked them off, the Chief Executive has left 7 days after joining, and it seems a whole host of clubs and players have knocked them back in the transfer window. No one wants to go near them when they see the details.

Its not that difficult to find players that would improve them enough to finish above Watford, Norwich, and Burnley, which is their immediate objective. There's players like that all over Europe. Big Sam got us Kirchoff, Kone, and Khazri in this window. Yet they haven't been able to do it. Ashley got them 3 french internationals and 2 other players when he was in a similar position. The only explanation at this point is that they haven't got the money, which to be fair, was never any secret.

Which makes spending £25m on Chris Wood an extraordinarily stupid decision. He's on a 2.5 year contract as well. Even if he performs relatively well, his value will plummet to next to nothing in almost no time. They didn't really need a right back either. You just can't afford to make dreadful decisions like that when you're on a lower midtable budget, and it looks like that was all the money they had. They are more like Venkys Chicken than Man City owners. They currently have the worst side they've had in 30 years and if they go down, their owners mightn't be able to prop them up next season.

You do wonder why PIF would have anything to do with this at all, and I really don't know. The only thing that I can think of is related to the PR angle. Very easy to forget now, but when this deal was first mooted, there was a genuine expectation that fans might protest against the idea of these people owning their club (!) Khasshogi had only been dead for a little over a year at that point. If they went and spent billions on Man United or Inter, the concern would be that the whole thing would backfire and create more negative publicity than good. Staveley had been kicking about the middle east looking to buy a club for years - why not give her the money (less than the cost of the Crown Prince's yacht) and see what the response is? They'll get their investment back off her one day, and they'd have a better idea of what the results would be if they ever decided to do it for real. Bin Salman has spent loads on PR people to try and salvage his image. It would be a very useful exercise for them.

Either way, the money clearly isn't there now. Maybe Staveley and her husband hope that will change? Maybe that's why her fella's spending his spare time superimposing the PIF director's head onto Shearer?

The immediate future for the mags looks very bleak indeed for me. Wouldn't be surprised to see Defoe blasting goals past them for us again before 2022 is out.

I think it's wishful thinking unfortunately mate. I think they'll be spending silly money in the summer if they stay up.

I cant see it happening, but spending vast sums of money and having huge wage bills can't be permeantly sustainable if you don't have the global brand to back it up.... and Newcastle don't have that, and might never have that unless they win things

They'd have probably called him a granny shagger and berated him for not marrying her when she was a couple of years younger.
