That was my point. I actually don't recall Reid rejecting it, but seems we were rejecting a two legged playoff to get in the qualifying rounds of the UEFA cup which seems a bit nuts. Hopefully someone with a better memory than me can place some context?
I see (You must be logged on to see external links). Maybe by 2006 English clubs entered in round 3 and Reid was rejecting entry in round 1 which meant 6 games (or more importantly drunken European mini-breaks).
6 qualifying games either way. West Ham won it in 99 by winning 3 intertoto ties.
We lost in 2001 after drawing 4-4 with Troyes as SJP in our 3rd tie.
They'd changed the structure of the intertoto by the time we entered it in 2006 so we came into the 3rd intertoto round in July only a week after the world cup final.
Won one tie and we got into the preliminary qualifying round of the uefa. Then played the final qualifying round.
Still 6 matches before entering the competition properly, but by 2005 Uefa had introduced the group stage. Something that wasn't there in 2001, which just meant teams entered the knockout rounds after an intertoto final.
In 2012 we played Madeira we entered at the final qualifying round then went into the groups.
