Northern trains

No rail line between Durham and Sunderland thanks to Beeching the prick
Hetton was the first place in the country, and possibly the world with a proper steam railway.

The town crest has a Rocket locomotive and the word "Progress". A sick joke

200 years later, no railway. Thank you Beeching. Progress my arse

So what’s happening then? You always seem pretty clued up about the railway. Are you part of a passenger focus group? A disgruntled ex/current employee. A failed manager??

Nah no connection, I just follow stuff as I live on the Blyth and Tyne Railway, so curious what's going on behind the political bs. They've wanted fasted services between Newcastle and Middlesbrough for ages and this is it pretty much. Just a two-hourly service missing half the stops.

Just seen a thread about it awhile back, thought they already started tbh:

- The times are on there though for those interested, nice and useful for those who go to match - not.

Always thought it was the Darlington and Stockton Railway, learn something new tonight and that was only the first public railway.

Pretty sure it closed well before Beeching.
The actual Sunderland - Durham line, Via Hetton closed 10 years before Beeching. But, I think the line from Durham to Sunderland was still available going through South Hylton, Cox Green, then joining the Leamside line through Penshaw and Fence Houses. Then branching off over that viaduct over the river near Leamside and joining the East Coast main line just North of Durham. I'm sure it was still open until after Beeching?

I can remember getting a train from Brady Square (Washington Station), direct to the Durham Big Meeting well after 1963. Must have used that route?
