It’s obviously better to have a player available fifteen games a season who can make telling contributions to win points rather than having a fit but crap try hard for a full season who contributes nowt.

I’m not really sure where Niall Huggins fits into that debate as he was neither regularly fit or particularly all that good. I feel for him as having the amount of injures he’s had can be no fun at all like.

09 is the perfect example of why attitude is more important than talent. And indeed Huggins (the title of the thread) is a very clear example of my availability is more important than talent and even attitude
 
People talk about luck and sometimes injuries can be bad luck. But some players are more durable than others as well. Durability is an attribute just like pace, strength, first touch, technique etc.

They’re all co dependent really. I was rarely injured, tried really hard but was shite. No good to anyone above local leagues.
A mate was at Cov academy, brilliant, loads of interest from clubs but couldn’t be arsed. No use to anyone beyond local leagues.
My son has a mate that was set to sign for Chelsea academy at 13/14. Developed a rare bone disorder, probably won’t play again.
You need a reasonable sprinkling of all three and some luck to do really well.

I think Higgins had a higher ceiling than Hume or Cirkin tbh but his body wasn't up for it. You can't play 5 games or less and have a year out consistently and develop fully. He done well enough to come back and was possibly our best player when he did but then he was out for another year and eventually that catches up with you.

Unfortunate for the lad but if he had played consistently there's a good chance he woul shave been far better than what we seen of him.

I don't think he is saying availability isn't important, as it is, rather that it isn't the most important quality to have as ultimately without talent a player is useless
 
An 8/10 player who plays every game is more useful than a 10/10 player who can only manage 10 games a season. The likes of Huggins and Alese are good players (potentially PL standard IMO) but they're simply not available enough to be of any use to us.

Agree. Look at the 2 contenders we had for the right back slot at the start of the 2022-2023 season:

Trai Hume - no great pace or dribbling ability, but solid as a rock, great in the air and NEVER gets injured. Genuinely cannot remember a game he has missed since he joined
Niall Huggins - pace to burn, 2 great feet, great on the ball but cannot stay fit. 3 major injuries in the first 2 seasons at the club, plus a load of niggles. Part of the reason he's now playing occasional games at L1 level

You could argue that Huggins is the better footballer, but Hume has that brilliant attribute of always being available for selection.

Before anyone starts, I'm not a Hume hater, I really rate the lad - just being objective in my comparisons with Huggins
 
Never got the Huggins love in. If he wasn’t injured all the time he’d be carving out a career in L1 and Championship. But because he’s injured all the time he’s carving out a career in …. Oh.

Aye, canny lad. Never PL level.
