Drive past that site every other day - what a sad wreck it is now, can’t believe the council don’t force the owners to do something with it. Got all those gleaming buildings and then what looks like a WW2 bomb site! One of my favourite pubs back in the day, all types in there, canny terrace, then up to Riverside for top sounds.
It was the best pub in Newcastle.

Its amazing how many normal people there are, compared to now. No gravy stained tops, druggies or chavs. Enjoyed watching that like, reminds me of going with m,e parents as a kid... Its also amazing the difference between the number of colour groups compared to now. Shows how much the country has changed in a little over quarter of a century.

I went to the shit tip on New Year's Day 1985. It was a cauldron of racist hate.

I've never been remotely bothered about Newcastle. I go to the RVI once a year and that's about it. Hate the driving and parking even then.
Blimey Keith, where do you live that fulfils all your cultural and personal needs so that you don’t have to go to the big city up the road? Bands/theatre/comedy/food that’s not Italian/Indian??

I live in Sunderland mate. I eat very well in and around the city. There's restuarants I still haven't tried that I need to get around to. Arabesque was the last one I ticked off. Sitting in the window of the Fat Buddha at Seaburn is great. It's scenic not grey buildings. We have the best theatre in the North East in my home town, not that I go much. Comedy? The last gig I went to was at Gateshead Stadium, not really into live bands.

I like driving, the countryside and the coast. The other Sunday we went to Helmsley and Robin Hood's Bay. Had about 7 hours out and about with lunch and tea thrown in.

If you want to be stuck in traffic in Newcastle or at the metro centre crack on. Metro or buses aren't for me.

I'm happy relaxing with the wife and / or family in Durham or North Yorkshire, maybe even Northumberland. There's 9 of us off to the Tontine for lunch today, in honour of my sister who's just passed.

A city with busy, bad roads and shit parking? Meh!

Good reply Keith - yer life sounds canny and I’m not judging it! Commiserations on the family death.

I was 21 in 1985 and watching that seems as if it was a million years ago. Pity there was no footage of the Handyside Arcade which went the journey the following year to be replaced by the godawful Eldon Garden.

Used to spend all day going in all the record shops back in the day ...Virgin,Callers,Windows, HMV, Listen Ear/Volume,Old Hitz,Pet Sounds and even the stores had decent selections ie John Menzies,WH Smith,Woolies,Boots etc.

People seemed a lot happier back then.
In the 70's we had people striking constantly and the UK going to IMF to get a bail out because the country was going bankrupt. In the '80's we had Thatcher and mass civil unrest with the miners strike and 3 day long riots in places like Birmingham, Tottenham and Liverpool. People never look at the positives of today - there are so many things so much better today and yet politicians and the internet are desperate to tell you its so awful in this country - its not.

I agree mate, but you can’t deny there are more smiles in that short video than you tend to see currently.

Totally agree - I think we were actually happier then - we had less to be happy about but we worried less. Now we have 24 hours worth of media explaining 1000 reasons not to be happy. Boris Johnson and Nigel Farage will tell you how awful life in the EU is - its utterly untrue it does not impact our happiness. Corbyn will tell you how awful it is to live in this awful unfair country - its not true, this is still a great country to live in. This country was in an utter mess in the 70's and early 80's but I do think people were happier. The internet has massively contributed to this.

no ones walking around looking at their phones in their hand

You just see more awful things as there's more places to see it, constant news channels with nothing else to report on, the internet. 24 hours a day, every day.

The internet in your hand has also made society more materialistic. You don’t even have to leave your bed of a morning to be bombarded with things you don’t really need. Things were far simpler back then.

Does anyone even get a copy of Kays catalog anymore?

Fairly certain that they use to serve the burger and chips on a proper plate with knives and forks

Didn't it use to be the main road to Scotland?
It was the main road to Scotland and not that long ago. Definitely seen pictures in the 60s before Swan roundabout was built. Through Low Fell, straight over Tyne Bridge onto Northumberland Street and head north.

I'm convinced Benitez and Ashley are not at loggerheads at all, the situation would have come to a head long before now . I think its suits both of them to keep up this 'good cop/bad cop' routine which keeps the fans onside and allows the pantomime villain to get along season after season without spending any of the Sky millions that keep pumping into the club. The Almoron fee was funded by a bank loan, so he hasn't even had to dip into his pocket at all, meanwhile he is slowly recouping his money from the club and still stands to make his 300 million profit if he can sell. The muppets who spent more than half the season trying to arrange protests and demonstrations ( then suddenly abandoned the campaign despite achieving nothing) have once again been duped into silence by Ashley and Benitez taking out a chucky loan on a MLS journeyman who hasn't shown any sign of being able to cut it in the PL, apparently the Atalanta fans were pissing themselves laughing after taking 21 million quid from Newcastle. So Benitez will sign his new contract, he will confirm that he has had new money promised , then Ashley will backtrack again, the whole saga will begin again, Benitez will be on his huge salary for the next 5 years, Ashley will continue to bleed the club funds and keep trying to sell the club, and the real victims, the fans , will continue to twist and moan ( and protest) while still handing over their money every week, and as long as they finish one place above the bottom 3, nothing will change. The various protest groups have completely bottled it, everything they've done has had no impact at all, how f***ing sad is that? Its so obvious they are being manipulated, there's no way that Benitez isn't complicit in Ashleys grand plan. There's literally nothing on their horizon. Nothing.
