Newcastle Manager Situation

As I said earlier, Howard Wilkinson had won the league title more recently when he took over here, than any of Benitez' achievements. He hasn't won the CL or a domestic league in over a decade, despite managing filthy rich clubs with fantastic squads. His last 3 jobs have been abject failures; barring winning the Europa League with the CL holders, he's taken all of his last 3 clubs backwards, and he did the same at Liverpool in his last season there.

He has had some brilliant success, but the fact he's going from Real Madrid to Newcastle tells you what a spectacular fall in reputation he's suffered. The fact he ever got the Real gig was an astonishing anomaly in the 1st place, and is only because he is a Real Madrid fan and came through their system - had he been Jo Smith from Consett he'd never have got anywhere near that job given his recent employment history.
:lol::lol: are you really comparing Rafa with Wilkinson? Wow that's desperate. Even if he may not have won a major title (except the Europa League) he nearly won the league with Liverpool in 09, and actually won the Coppa Italia and came 3rd with Napoli which is decent. Had Real ticking over in the CL too and was only 2 points off top when sacked.

This is a desperate thread

Not the way I remember it, Liverpool were going well at one point but Benitez imploded with his Keegan esq FACT rant & it was a bit of a stroll to the title for Man U from then on.

Napoli had one that cup before he arrived & finished 2nd. He spent a fortune taking them to 3rd & then 5th, albeit winning that cup in his final season so he took them backwards.

He's a good manager, but winning a cup with a team who's outspending his rivals doesn't make him an outstanding one. It's not quite the coup you think it is.

This Napoli thing is a total myth. He took them from 2nd to 5th and was peddled. Replaced with the empoli manager and looking better than they ever did under Benitez.

He done shite there

In that Liverpool season they came second having lost just 2 all season man  the only time that has ever happened. (I remember it because one of the defeats was to us even though we went down!) And without Machedas freak winner they would have won it.

Exactly

He's a bloody awful manager

Maybe but they drew shit loads which cost them the league.

No idea what goal you're talking about but it'd have had to have been some goal considering Man U won the league with at least a week to spare.

Amazing coup for them and shows the way some still perceive the Toon as some sort of big clerb with 52000 and Champions league pedigree.

Seen some silly comments on this thread saying you lot wouldn't take him as manager :lol: how many Champions league winning managers have managed SAFC? And someone saying Fat Sam is a better boss :lol: The nearest he came to winning anything he was beaten by... Tufty himself!

As you can see no I'm not a mag but it doesn't take one to realise that this is an outstanding appointment.
Success is all relative.
Rafas success at Valencia does trump anything Sam has done admittedly as does his champions league triumph at Liverpool but league form wise other than Valencia he's underachieved really. Spent a fortune at liverpool and didn't really get close. Rodgers got lot closer. Took over the champions in Italy and couldn't replicate it. Napoli he didn't come close either despite a big spend. Difficult to judge Real as managers come and go like buses there. Allardyce has pretty much achieved the maximum he could have in all his jobs as far as league position goes and has no real failures on his CV.
Big Sam has suffered from being English more than anything. We've had Keane, Bruce, oneil, di canio, Poyet and advicaat and with exception of Poyet he's been no more route one than any of others yet this label followed him around and as a consequence he doesn't get credit he deserves.

And you're a desperate poster, you spend your life on here. Do little Boro even have a message board?

Go away smoggie, neither Newcastle or Sunderland care about Middlesbrough.

I agree with this. Sensible for a change ;)

He's under achieved massive in the league, hence why he keeps getting sacked.

Got closer than Rodgers in 09.
I agree about big Sam over his career. But Rafa won't chuck games against the big teams like Sam normally does. It will be interesting and will inevitably come down to the derby and Norwich games.

All my posts are sensible but I just call it as I see it. My opinion on Rafa would've been the same had he come here and I'd have no doubt been branded a WUM amongst many other pleasantries if this was the case. ;)
I genuinely don't see this as the coup it's being made out to be but then again I said Ranieri was an awful appointment in back in August so what do I know!

4 points behind in 09 Rodgers was closer than that and with 3 to go Liverpool were favourites.
Sam didn't chuck games against big teams when at Bolton as his modus operandi became different as time went on and they be and a genuine top 8 side. Then came the mags and the ridiculous sacking when 11th. Blackburn I'm sure they finished tenth one year having looked knackered when us took over then again was ridiculously sacked by a lunatic owner. West Ham he done as much as his could for me but their fans delusions of grandeur are pathetic.
Given the right resources I think Sam could've made a fist of it with the right club but he's never had that luxury. Instead we see managers like AVB, Ramos, Scolari, Pellegrini, Santini given the big gigs when there CVs aren't that special when scrutinised . Yes big Phil won World Cup but big difference in international management compared to club.
