Personally, I think you'd have to have a screw loose to pay that kind of money for a player from the MLS, huge gamble.

Has Rafa actually made any decent signings? The only one I can think of who's done alright is Ritchie and Rafa tried his best to sell him in the summer.

Alright then, the Swiss League - they have teams in the CL and have sold good young players to the PL recently. Lets call it a 25 year old from the Swiss league who can't get a game for Peru. Should Watford sign him for 25m, or was Will Hughes a safer bet? Or Roberto Pereyra? Or Etienne Capoue? Or Abdoulaye Doucoure? All cost less than Almiron, and most of them younger. What do they all have in common - they came from better sides in better leagues, and some of them had played international football for decent sides.

How many 25 year olds with no international pedigree have left the MLS to play in big European leagues, and been successful? Players tend to go from Europe to the MLS, usually when they're 40. You don't get many top Europeans in the peak signing for the Baltimore Badgers, and you don't get many 10-cap, 25 year old Paraguayans leaving the Baltimore Badgers to go to Spain or England for 25m.

Almiron has started 8 out of Paraguays last 11/12 or so games when fit.

Newcastle United aren't based in London, clubs in London have it far easier to attract players and this is common knowledge no? I'd hazard a guess a player from Spurs or Juventus would rather play for Watford than Newcastle given their location.

Or maybe just maybe, after scouting Almiron for numerous months/games that they infact liked the player and didn't mind he was playing in the MLS?

- Sold a 23 year old Mitrovic and replaced him with Joselu 5m, and Rondon on loan (who is 30, has half as many goals as Mitrovic, and they don't even own him)
- Signed Jacob Murphy for 14m and he's on loan in the Championship
- Signed Muto for 10m and doesn't pick him
- Signed Gayle for 11m, on loan in the Championship
- Signed Sels for 7m, he played 9 games and left at a 50% loss.
- Signed Grant Hanley for 6m, sold him a year later for 3m
- Signed a 33 year old Daryl Murphy for 4m, played started about 3 games and left for a fraction of that
- Spent 5m on Javi Manquillo :)

To be fair, Dubravka was a really good signing, Schar is pretty decent, as is Fernandez.

He's started 3 games for Paraguay since July 2017...

And Paraguay have played 8 or 9 games in that time, and he was on the bench for a few of them.

Clint Dempsey and Geoff Cameron are two. Cameron was even 27 and had basically no experience with the national team. Dempsey was a little younger (23 I think) but was very, very raw. Both came out of MLS and were reasonable players in the Premier League, and Dempsey in particular had a couple quite nice seasons with Fulham.

25 million is a hefty fee for "reasonable in the Premier League" and Almiron is rather the opposite of the physical spectrum from those two, but decent players in MLS get the shit kicked out of them on a reasonable basis. The big difference isn't that, it's time on the ball. I don't think Almiron is good enough - he has thrived in a fairly free role on what has been a good team his whole time there - but MLS not the absolute backwater some people on here seem to think it is. It's a completely different beast because there is no promotion and relegation over here. You won't see individual skill level varying anywhere near as much in any European league than I've seen as over here, let alone on the same squad.

Also, you're not serving yourself well with your hyperbole. MLS isn't the f***ing Polish league, and 32 or 33 aren't 40. There's plenty of truth in how the leagues/pyramids relate without exaggerating the facts.

Hearings unconfirmed reports from our sources inside the club that Rafa has contributed to the Almiron transfer himself. Benitez could have given anything up to £4 million to get the deal over the line. This is unheard of in football z

f***ing hell they’ll say anything not to admit they were wrong

Absolute can’t adnit he is wrong about Ashley

Blokes an idiot, a perfect example of a so called fan living up to the preconceptions that rival fans have.

We all have them but that ***** special, no wonder his wife left him the absolute beast.

No idea why posters are talking about Almiron in the same breath as strikers?

He doesn't play up front, he is a creative midfielder and to be fair is a very tidy player (MLS level or not) and Atlanta played some superb football under Tata last season.

He moved to the MLS and was a DP so was getting huge wages, it's an attractive league for South American players.

Newcastle probably paid over the odds, but sure every other club in England bar Spurs has been doing that time and time again.

I like taking the piss out of the Mags as much as anyone, but when the majority on here never saw the player play before it's a bit silly to dismiss him isn't it?

You're going against the logic you Mag ****.

Now this is what you call a cult of personality. This kind of talk really does not dissimilar to the exaggeration of the benolvent leader's achievements in North Korea.

Pretending to support us. Pathetic - at least they've given up on attending our matches.
How do you know he's a mag? Looks like a lads fan to me.

It's you isn't it.

i’ve seen him play for Atlanta 2-3 times. He looks fast in that league and a skillful left foot, but he’s all left. Has a fair few passes cut out which will probably increase but will say has a good attitude. Will probably score some goals on the break but will be surprised if teams don’t know how to defend him after 2-3 months.

Interesting to see how he does with hard tacking on heavy winter pitches compared to a lot of placcy here...
