I don't follow. Benitez spent c£25m bringing 8 players into the club, the players that had a transfer fee were Dubravka (£3.6m), Schar (£3.6m), Fernandez (£6m) and Muto (£9.5m). Defensively sound indeed. 8th best defence in the league last season. Haven't lost by more than 1 goal in the league this season, hardly been humpings have they?

Played 25 times last season, 13 starts 12 as sub.
Ritchie played 35 times (3 as a sub).
Atsu started 19 and also made 9 sub appearances
Kenedy started 13 times.
The 4 wide players we have are all involved to varying degrees. It's not like he's not getting a game at all. Competition for places is there, although could be better.
