Benitez would prefer to stay but wants £100M for transfers complete control over them and a salary of £6M. He's playing them like a fiddle including the fans he loves

they will recover that loss with the tv money from this season, non story...unlike short who decided not to spend, go figure.
Well their turnover dropped £40m when they went down so the tv deal would have to give them £50m more than 2 years ago to break even, all else being equal.

Have you seen our books? We might have zero debt but the mags will have something like 60 times the TV money going into their turnover next season, Ellis will be getting our parachute payment.

You’re not very clued up.

The Mags may have got around £130m TV money - £90m of which is to be used to pay the deficit...leaving £40m....once you take away wages etc I reckon it's more like £30m.

Which is nothing in the grand scheme of it - they'll have to sell players.

exactly, tv money of over 90 million plus the money from sales (albeit spread over a few seasons) and used it to invest in promotion, this season the parachute payment will be paid and next season @100M for being in the premier...taking a bit of a hit to make sure they were back where the money is, would love to see them in the crap but this statement means nothing.

People are laughing at this, but I'd say that was a strategic and shrewd investment by Ashley with a long term perspective in mind.

Look at the alternative of what Short has done to us instead. Investing a fortune to get out and back to the wealth of the Premier League in comparison to literally spending nothing and ending up in league one.
Exactly this. Rather than as another stick to beat him with, this is yet another example of Ashley showing the sort of business nous that unfortunately seemed to elude Short.

Upon relegation, Ashley:

- Negotiated massive incoming transfer fees for relegated players
- Retained the services of Benitez and therefore ensured the fans would be satisfied
- Allowed Benitez to spend every penny of income from sales
- Green lit high wages for incoming players, effectively allowing Benitez to cherry pick from the top of Champ/lower half of Prem.

Contrast that with Short/Bain, who upon relegation:

- Failed to sell any of the big-name wantaways Borini, Lens, Khazri, NDong, Djilibodji
- Didn't reinvest any of the big money we got for Pickford
- Dithered in getting rid of Moyes, failed to attract McKinness, delayed in appointing Grayson
- Wasted weeks trying to peddle the club to Germans
- Failed to significantly strengthen the playing squad, with Grayson restricted to the lower leagues & loan system.

Ashley effectively ran the club like a Premier League club in waiting, for one season. It was a gamble. It paid off.

Short ran the club like a League One club in waiting. Both owners got what their outlook deserved.

What about the net spend??

Wages went up £37.5m in the Championship. What the fuck?

I thought Rafa was a genius??

Must better to make a smaller loss and get relegated to league 1!?

Mike was protecting his asset and is now able to sell it for around 250million.

Ellis ended up paying 120million for someone to take it off his hands.
This, pretty much. I'm genuinely amazed how blinkered football fans can be. It's simple business, and Ashley - for all his faults - has proven to be a much better businessman than Short.

It's also staggering how much shit Newcastle fans give him really. One thing Ashley could certainly improve on is PR!

It’s a lot more than we’ll be getting. Ellis is getting our parachute payments

I'm confused by what you're saying, is your £90m their revenue in these accounts? Because if so that will include the parachute payment. And that £90m would have been spent paying the £112m wage bill. I think they'll have received £120-130m tv and prize money this year (based on last season's mid table clubs) so that barely covers their wage bill unless they offloaded a lot of wages last summer.
