As pointed out elsewhere on the internet, it's strange how Matt Ritchie comes out with patter like this when him and his colleagues had to go on strike over the bonus payments last season, and had similar issues the season before.

Calling Ashley an ‘honest guy’ when he’s a proven liar and Ritchie himself had to go on strike to get what he was contractually due.

I just don’t get why he was adored and idolised to the levels that he was. I get it with Keegan; he was a good player for them and then took them up to the top flight as manager and nearly won the league. I think he also genuinely did care for their club. Same with Robson to an extent though that has been blown out of all proportion.

However, with Benitez, he is a complete outsider who achieved no more at Newcastle than many other unpopular managers did. He was very savvy in that he knew the supporters and journalists were hostile towards Ashley and used it as a bargaining chip to negotiate himself the best deal possible.

As an aside, (and I’d apply this to Sunderland as well) in the modern game, supporters should be wary of anyone becoming messiah like figures because with the game being as potentially lucrative as it is, there is always likely to be an alternative agenda once the surface is scratched. It’s sad, but what little loyalty there used to be in football has more or less entirely eroded now.

As we have said a million times, the bloke was and still is a very good manager, before him we had Mcclaren , Carver, Pardew who was a busted flush come the end so Rafa coming gave us a bit of hope of quality for the future, he’s a 100% football man, in his job he gives it everything and knows his stuff.He got involved with the area, the fans, the people and he got our respect after a comical period, he gave us our respect back.
The football aside, it wasn’t great, Rafa was a pure football manager and just a likeable bloke , that’s why he endeared himself to us.I just liked the bloke and so did we all irrespective of achieving little in truth he gave us a bit of pride in the shirt back.

Except that’s not factually correct.

Footballer bonuses are tradition and not contractual. Usually negotiated by the club captain direct with the owner as a ‘nice to have’ and renegotiate every 12 months.

Still, don’t let the facts get in the way of repeating lie after lie in the hope it becomes true.

The first time round it was non payment of bonuses that they'd earned the season before iirc

theres this massive gap opening up between the forward they've bought and the defence...Exactly the same as what he did at Sunderland (filled the midfield with journeymen) and numerous other clubs.. !8 months prediction before it all goes downhill at the tip

I've always found Benitez the total opposite to a like able bloke Bobby Robson was a like able bloke. This goes a lot further back than Newcastle too. I remember him being hated by lots of other fans during his Liverpool days, including Newcastle fans.

They will finish 15th this season in my opinion. Bruce will get enough results out of them at the start of the season before the results go wrong after Christmas.

Ashley seems to be spending a canny bit. The utter bastard.
