I don't understand the unrest. The club has gone out and spent money, we are pushing and trying to compete with the teams we can compete with, and you have to be realistic with who those teams are. The fans should be supporting the team and be with us.

Knows his onions does Matt.

The Gift That Keeps on Giving

He made some very good points. And whilst Ashley is far from the perfect owner, the infatuation with Benitez from fans and local journalists alike has escalated the dislike of Ashley to ridiculously unreasonable levels.

It's all gone very very quiet on Benitez.

They've realised it's impossible to argue that he was being honest with the supporters.

It won't be long until they're claiming it was just a small minority who were fooled by him ...
... the usual Mag history rewriting.

They're too deluded to get the message they are bottom of the table team

Benitez is out for one person and that person is Benitez. Blaming Ashley for him taking the Chinese money was typical Benitez and those thick ***** up the road lapped it up.

When they find out how long it actually takes to get a Chinese work visa, they’ll shit bricks.

I just don’t get why he was adored and idolised to the levels that he was. I get it with Keegan; he was a good player for them and then took them up to the top flight as manager and nearly won the league. I think he also genuinely did care for their club. Same with Robson to an extent though that has been blown out of all proportion.

However, with Benitez, he is a complete outsider who achieved no more at Newcastle than many other unpopular managers did. He was very savvy in that he knew the supporters and journalists were hostile towards Ashley and used it as a bargaining chip to negotiate himself the best deal possible.

As an aside, (and I’d apply this to Sunderland as well) in the modern game, supporters should be wary of anyone becoming messiah like figures because with the game being as potentially lucrative as it is, there is always likely to be an alternative agenda once the surface is scratched. It’s sad, but what little loyalty there used to be in football has more or less entirely eroded now.

That George Courtney bloke was on the radio the other day. Said the skunks played more freely and open in their friendly. Said something along the lines of the pressure is off them now from playing under such a great manager. Unreal thought process those lunatics.

He's absolutely right. Where do their fans expect to finish ffs? Anywhere from 17th upwards is the aim for any club outside the top 6. Imagine if they were in our position man. No wonder they are branded deluded
On a similar vein though , is there not a lack of understanding by some players of what football means to fans in general and possibly more so in areas like ours .I am getting really fed up of hearing " fans need to stop putting expectation on the players" when we are at home .We buy our tickets , support the lads ,in huge numbers( again this rarely seems to get lauded over like some clubs) and yet after the first result our " expectations" contribute to a draw. These players and managers need to increase their own expectations in my opinion ..we know where we are in division 3 ..where we deserve to be ...but yes with our budget , fanbase , and squad we expect to at lest see a year on year improvement not " same old same old "

He always reminded me of the Matt Lucas hyponist

"Don't look at me or the dreadful football, look at Mike Ashley and shout at his shops."

"Yes master, if you go we do ....."

Has a decent point given fat mike runs the club mostly right. However fat mike has let himself down a bit choosing managers on occasions.

I enjoyed Watford playing freely and open in the cup final. And they’re a far better team than us.

Fair play to the team for playing with no pressure in a pre-season friendly...
