That Jamie xx album surely can't be a let down, most of the album's probably been released already and everything sounds great from it so far.

The song on there that he did with The Avalanches is arguably song of the year so far for me.

I stumbled upon The Calamatix debut album this morning through Apple’s recommended new releases. Female fronted Ska/reggae stuff on Hellcat records, American but their lead singer grew up in Scotland. A bit like a female-fronted version of The Aggrolites with 2-Tone influences, which isn’t a massive surprise given the Tim Armstrong connection.

Also given Ben Lee’s new one a spin. He’ll never go back to being the master of the 2 minute pop song like in the 00s but it has its moments.
 
Bright Eyes is really good. Unfortunately, Conor Oberst isn't in a good place. There was videos of him live earlier this week and he's so drunk that he can't sing, stand and doesn't seem to know where he is. They've cancelled the rest of the tour after it because he 'lost his voice.'

Looking forward to listening to Jamie xx (previous poster about the Avalanches is right and sounds a lot like the song they did for the last Avalanches album), The Voidz, Waeve, and Sunset Rubdown.

Was just about to post this. Will listen to the new album but such a shame to hear about Conor. Hope he’s getting the help he needs

A load of other artists covering his songs.

There’s plenty of interesting covers here, it really stands out how good a songwriter he is.

Real shame. However, with artists that have a certain psyche, the downs/troubles are what ultimately drive the best material. I'm a huge fan of his, Ruminations is my absolute favourite of his. You can hear a lot of his "issues" throughout that album...

I've always thought he's massively underrated. He's obviously well thought of in the business, as there's a broad range of well known names chipped in here.
 
Part 1 of my big catch up of new stuff. Mostly from the week before last so I'll count this as a week for AotW purposes:

Julie Dawson: I like this, doesn't outstay its welcome. A bit mre laidback than her band.
Tindersticks: just magnificent. Sticks on steroids.
Floating Points: firmly in dance floor territory. Properly good.
Jade Hairpins: the Fucked Up splinter band are back with a massive glam rock stomp. Massively enjoyable.
Mermaid Chunky: artsy, awkward pop. Some of it doesn't work but there's not been a better song than Chaperone this year.
Porches: enjoyable, emo flavoured indie rock. Short and snappy songs.
Nilufa Yanya: better than her second album, maybe not as good as her debut. A bit more guitar focused than before, maybe?
The Jesus Lizard: the alt rock veterans are back. This is worth a listen, maybe a little more melodic than before.
Willie Watson: bluegrass/Americana flavoured folk. It's excellent. The closing "Reap em in the Valley" is particularly marvellous.
We Are Winter's Blue And Radiant Children: apocalyptic post-rock. as you'd expect from a band with their membership. Very good.
Colin Stetson: an absolute cracker of an album. Sax forward ambient something. All instrumental. The man's a genius.
Sarah Davachi: doom organ as usual. Very good but a tad niche.
El Khat: proper sounds of the middle east. They're Tel Aviv based but from Iraq, Poland, Morocco and Yemen. Quite addictive.
Trentemoller: synthy shoegaze. Really good.
FIDLAR: the one release from this week in this batch. The LA skatepunkers are back and nothing much has changed. Entertainingly bratty.

AotW: Tindersticks. Willie Watson, Colin Stetson, Floating Points and El Khat all very good and Jade Hairpins massively fun. Listen to that Mermaid Chunky song as well, it's brilliant.
