I've just discovered Nia Archives and Barry Can't Swim via the Mercury nominations. Both excellent imo.
 
Well, my lovely sausages, time for the weekly review:

Cults: I had genuinely forgotten they existed but this is bloody good1 Like St Etienne with a tad more guitar.
Humanist: good, energetic guitars, guest vocals, nice album.
Empire of the Sun: one I missed being out, their first in 7 years. It's pretty good, synthy pop, one track which lists animals sounds like Lemon Jelly, which is a good thing.
Blur: live album, 30 tracks so serves as a best of. Very good.
Nathan Bowles Trio: the banjo man is joined by two mates. Instrumental Americana with a lovely vibe. Really good.
Nightshift: old school political indie, good songs, Worth a listen.
Wand: you know the deal, its woozy psych rock and it's really very, very good.
Alex Izenberg & the Exiles: great understated vocals, excellent songs, a quality album.
American Aquarium: rocking Americana. Good album, reminds me of early DBT.
Crack Cloud: ooh la la! This is a massive, massive step forward. Quite, quite marvellous!
Kelsey Michael: piano based Cornish folk, really lovely, reminds me of Laura Nyro.
Sam Wilkes, Craig Weinrib and Dylan Day: an insrumental album that spans jazz, post-rock and Americana. Really good.
Annelies Monsere: Belgian (I think) musician who focuses on organs, synths, vocals and drones (in a musical sense, not a flying thing sense). Very good.
Old Unconscious: jazzish project from Cory Gray of the Delines. Really good.

Album of the week: that'd be Crack Cloud, just terrific.
 
There are releases this week from 137 (Adrian Utley and Seb Rochford's new band), Jack White, Meshell Ndegeocello, Michael and the Might Midnight Revival (Killer Mike), The Smashing Pumpkins, Why?, X, Personal Trainer, Chrystabell & David Lynch and J.R.C.G.

Looking forward to Jack Whites album. Heard a couple of tracks on 6 and it sounds more like the Stripes than anything he's done since. Pretty heavy.
Expecting it on Tidal tomorrow?

This is excellent. Never heard them before and it took a few tracks before it clicked. A really varied and interesting album.

Worth listening to the rest of their output. The self titled release was what got me into them, but they've grown a lot as a band since then. It has gone from really angular post-punk to something more mature. Their story is quite interesting too.

They're incredible live as well and touring next month!

been listening to this today, really good... much like that early heavier blues type white stripes sound, thought his recent output (bar the raconteurs) was bit meh whereas this on first list grabs my attention.
 
Weekly review time:

137: the third Portishead member breaks cover. Starts off as post-rockish jazz, goes a bit more wibbly later. Not as good as either Beak> or Beth but they're album of the year contenders.
Jack White: exceptional. As mentioned above, a heavier blues sound with some garage rock thrown in. Archbishop Harold Holmes is one of the tunes of the year.
Personal Trainer: very good, stil;l very Pavement, although they've dialled that down a little from their debut.
Chrystabell & David Lynch: woozy, semi-ambient, haunted/haunting vocals. Lynchian!
X: supposedly the swansong from the veteran LA punk band. As always, there are country inflections in the rock. Very good.
Why?: first in five years from the band who fuse alt hiphop with indie rock. This is very good, maybe a little more mellow than previously.
JRCG: Debut album, kind of industrial funk that reminds me of some of Wire's career, with a bit of Talking Heads and a little Cabaret Voltaire thrown in. An unexpected treat.
Brigitte Calls Me Baby: indie poppish album. The singer has an Orville Peck-esque croon. Rough Trade shops like them and so do I.
86YVs: two Maccabees, their brother and one of their mates on drums. Decent but there's a little too much going on.

Album of the week: Jack White and Personal Trainer are both excellent but I'll say JRCG.

The English Teacher record is the pick for me like

Saw them on Saturday night and they are superb live as well.
