New Music Releases Thread

Sonic Youth's Live In Brooklyn 2011 was released as a proper album a few weeks back. It's their final US gig and it's a good one with them playing some songs they hadn't performed for a very long time. Just a couple of months later it was known that Kim and Thurston had split meaning the band was also finished. After that they just fulfilled a handful of festival dates in South America the same year.

My review of last week's new stuff. Somewhat belated as I always get less listened to at my Mam's...

Our Broken Garden: really very good indeed. Bella Union always sign quality bands. I'd used Lanterns on the Lake as a comparison maybe.
A Giant Dog: epic alt prog. Reminds me a bit of a mostly female fronted Church of the Cosmic Skull.
Buck Meek: pretty good. A little bit country, a little bit folk.
Spellling: re-recordings of songs from across her career so already quite familiar. Good.
Mapache: as with their previous releases, harmonies to the fore, simple well written songs. Excellent!
Hannah Georgas: alt singer-songwriter stuff. Pretty good.
Hiss Golden Messenger: excellent as always, warming, folkie Americana. Top stuff!
Old Crow Medicine Show: if you listen to one bluegrass album this year, make it this one. They're always good but this is exceptional!
Danger Mouse & Jemini: this is good. Recorded 20 years ago. Really good retro feeling hip-hop.
Grandaddy: outtakes from Sumday, good listening
Nick Cave & Warren Ellis: a tremendous, tremendous live album. The source material is wonderful, the performers are masters. You want to be there!
Be Your Own Pet: they're back! Spiky, punky rock with hooks galore.
Becca Mancari: see the Hannah Georgas review. Actually, this is better.
Turnpike Troubadors:Americana veterans return. A good, solid album.
Morgan Wade: rocky country. Pretty good but not outstanding.
Islands: the band that were once Unicorns return with whimsical, psychedlic-ish indie stuff. Reminds me of a low budget Gorillaz at times.
The Armed: big rock sounds that aren't as interesting as the cover photo TBH.
Film School: indie rock veterans return with a melange of good sounds. Highly enjoyable1
Jaimei Branch: sadly, a posthumous album. Jazz that hints at great things. Really good.

Album of the week: I'll shy away from giving it to the magnificent live album and say Old Crow Medicine Show.

Okay, my very brief review of new stuff this week (as it was a quiet week):

Pale Blue Eyes: very good, a little motorik. a little New Order, worth a listen
Speedy Ortiz: you know what you're getting with Speedy Ortiz, female fronted indie rock. I think on early listening, this is one of their better albums.
Jeff Rosenstock: punky, singalong fun! This is great TBH...
PG Six: mesmerising folk rock. Some great guitar.
Slowdive: excellent shoegaze with little flecks of folk. They're better second time round than first time.
The Natvral: Kip Berman of The Pains of Being Pure at Heart goes a bit more college rock than indiepop. Very good!

Album of the week: could be any of them but I'm going with Jeff Rosenstock.

If Allison Russell’s new album is half as good as her last one it’ll be excellent! Courtney Barnett and The Coral for me as well I think.

There’s also probably an American punk release or 2 that don’t appear in your usual sources that Punk Rock Radar on Instagram will tell me about tomorrow lunchtime.

Courtney's album is abstract intrumentals, essentially the soundtrack to a film about her.
