New Music Releases Thread

My first weekly review of the year...

Belle and Sebastian: recorded at the same time as A Bit of Previous, I think this is the better album of the pair. Some cracking tunes. They're a national treasure!
Hal Cannon: this came out late last year. I was impressed enough by the track on the new Uncut CD to listen to the album. He's very good, a little Tom Waitesy in places
Molly: shoegaze/dreampop. Pretty impressive. Singer has a good voice.
James Yorkston, Nina Persson and the Second Hand Orchestra: exceptionally good. Mostly duets with some solo Yorkston. He's a national treasure!
Velvet Negroni: I guess this kind of gets filed under alt-hip hop. Lots of ideas. It flys by pretty rapidly.
Margo Price: another very strong album from Margo. She's moved a long way from her country beginnings. She's an international treasure!
Billy Nomates: really good again. Probably better than her debut. She's a national treasure!
Whitehorse: the most out and out country album of the week. Strong songs, male/female duets.
Gaz Coombes: his solo career goes from strength to strength. A little more wistful than Supergrass. He is, indeed, a national treasure!
Susana Santos Silva: sort of droney ambient stuff, bird song, street recordings etc. Interesting but not something I'd go back to a lot.
Rozi Plain: strong songs, a good album. The only complaint is that it's all a little one paced.

Album of the week: tough competition but my inherent bias gives it to Yorkston, Persson and the Second Hand Orchestra.
Enjoyed Belle & Sebastian, Billy Nomates. Thought Margo Price was better. If we cash all of those national treasures in we could pay the national debt off. Will give Yorkston et al a spin today.

We have new albums this week from Dave Rowntree, Guided By Voices, John Cale, July Talk, Ladytron, Lapsley, Mac DeMarco, Maneskin, The Bad Ends, The CIA (Ty Segall and his wife), We Are Scientists, Harmonious Thelonius, Tirna Basu & Arun Ramamurthy, Immaterial Possession, Slug, The Murder Capital, Kali Malone, Bad Ends and abracadabra.

Not sure what chance I'll get to listen to much this week as I fly to Santiago tomorrow for work.

The murder capital for me. Might see what Mac demarco and The CIA are like but demarco and segall don’t do much for me.

Enjoy your time in Santiago mate!

Only came on to make sure you included WAS in your weekly update. ;)

Stumbled on this gem last night, I'm not sure how new it is but was posted 12 days ago.

A bit Everything But The Girl-ish?

Probably been mentioned but Ryuichi Sakamoto has a new album out. He is going through his second bout of cancer and this album sounds like reflections on life and mortality. Its very mellow, Eno-like ambience, but also quite moving.

No weekly review this week as I've not had much time to listen to anything. Will aim for a doubler next week.

I can list the new releases for tomorrow, however. There are albums from Complete Mountain Almanac (the Dessner brothers, the wife of one of them and her mate), Fucked Up, King Tuff, Meg Baird, Sam Smith. Samia, SG Lewis, Sightless Pit, The Arcs, White Reaper, You Me At Six, Bob Stanley/Pete Wiggs Present Winter of Discontent (a compilation from the late 70s DIY scene), The Zephyrs, Joe Henry, SUEP, The Tubs, Gemma Ray, HC McEntire, Oozing Wound, Mozart Estate (Lawrence from Felt's latest project), JW Francis, Gena Rose Bruce, Beats & Pieces Big Band and Bass Drum of Death.
