New Music Releases Thread


A good week for new music, playing these pretty much on repeat.

Big Thief
I think they’ve gone up another level with this record. Their best yet.
Read somewhere they trimmed the album from 50 songs, I want the long version!
Spoon
Another cracking album, they rarely disappoint, such a consistent band.
 
Took me a few listens but BCNR is very good indeed. I do prefer it to the debut but have to admit I miss the chaos of tracks like Science Fair and Sunglasses.

Cate Le Bon also excellent, one of my favourites this year so far.

Probably right - better to get decent sales first than the pittance from there. That was more a reference in case anyone was searching for it. Do you know when it was recorded? That's Cush on track 2 right?

Red Kite Rising was recorded last weekend and the song is a tribute to Cush. It was his favourite bird and one flew overhead during his funeral. The song was played as part of the set during their tour at the end of last year. I think all of the other tracks were recorded as part of the sessions for Cock-a-hoop.
 
My slightly later than usual review of this week's new stuff:

Heal & Harrow: this week's token folk entry. Touches of the Unthanks but more Scottish and more spoken word. Pretty good!
alt-J: possibly the oddest release of the week. It's a continuation of the route they took after their Mercury win but includes snippets of opera and barbershop.
Big Thief: double album of the week number 1. The songs are all very good but it is a bit over long. I preferred it when they released two single albums in a year.
The Delines: soulful female fronted country from WIllie Vlautin's current band. Vlautin's vocals were one of the weaker things about Richmond Fontaine and this way we get his excellent lyrics sung by a tremendous voice.
Spoon: exceptionally good alt-rock. Ten albums in, this could be the one that goes big for them.
Trupa Trupa: Polish indie rock with the emphasis on the rock. Like lots of things and yet nothing else.
Frank Turner: a good album. Probably his most punk in a while.
Trentemoller: double album of the week number 2. Dreampop in excelsis. Very, very good if a tad overlong.
Andy Bell: double album of the week number 3. Again, very good, quite jangly but again, maybe 3 or 4 tracks too long.
Empath: Philadelphia noise punks go a bit K Records indie. Kind of enjoyable without changing the world. Probably good live.

Album of the week: Spoon just shade The Delines.
 
Spiritualized album is delayed from 25th Feb to 22nd Apr (manufacturing delays), although I've read that it has leaked. Tour starts soon so it's a shame not everyone will get to hear it before seeing them.
 
Spoon have to be one of the most bizarrely underappreciated acts of all time? They've been doing their thing for about twenty five years, receive universal acclaim in the media and by just about anyone who listens to them for probably every release and yet if you ask the average person they'll have never even heard their name before.

Don't think I'd ever listened to them before Hot Thoughts a few year ago and now I'd say they've probably got one of my favourite discographies in music.

I’ve always quite liked them without loving them but I’m very, very impressed by the new album.

@James has a point about the name though.

That’s a disappointment. One of the albums I was most looking forward to in the first quarter of the year.

I’ve genuinely never heard of them but gave this album a listen and think it’s really good. Terrible name, mind, as mentioned.

I think that's me as well. They're one of several bands that when I hear/see them, I think I quite like that, I should listen to them more. Then as soon as they're done I forget, until the next time, when I say exactly the same thing.

I really liked Ga x5, but find them dull on the whole

I've noticed a few tours being cancelled in the past couple of weeks for Americans coming to the UK and then seen The Cribs cancelling their tour the other day. Had one gig I was going to last week cancelled three days before the gig and the whole tour pushed back to August, bit annoying like but what can you do.

Was reading that Mike Skinner was getting a lot of grief last week when he cancelled The Streets tour and is DJing a few nights in London instead. Said the reason for it is there's no point trying to tour right now when you have a large group of people travelling together for the gigs who all need to test negative twice a day for however long the tour lasts to be able to perform. Would just end up missing a load of shows or having to cancel closer to the time.

Might get to see The Cribs after all - just announced they're supporting Modest Mouse in Central Park this summer. Fingers crossed.
