New Music Releases Thread

Going on holiday for a week next week. Any recommendations for album of the year?

I'd say Viagra Boys or Bicep, both completely different to each other
It was the opposite for me. Grabbed me immediately and I’m giving it a play through every other day! Double Negative completely passed me by a couple of year ago as well so it’s been a 2 for 1 :)

I much prefer double negative but need to give the new one more time

December albums seem to fare unfavourably in 'best of' lists but I'm still enjoying The Avalanches - We Will Always Love You. From this year I'd definitely recommend Arab Strap - As Days Get Dark.

Not as many releases this week as in the last couple but still some good things out. My summing up of things I've listened to:

Pond: Back on form after the Tame Impalaesque previous album. Some cracking songs on here and a good mix of more synthy tracks and more garagey rock stuff all with a bit of a psychedelic sheen.
Cindy: female fronted indiepop. Pretty good TBH.
The Bronx: I hadn't realised that they'd released their sixth album back in August so just caught up. They haven't really changed the hardcore/punk template.
The Specials: enjoyable covers of protest songs, some well known, some fairly obscure. I'm pleased to see a Chip Taylor song getting a wider audience.
Audiobooks: continues the template of album 1 (older man makes sonic template, younger posh woman talk-sings over the top). A bit darker than their previous material but still good.
Strand of Oaks: very good and, in parts, very Springsteen. There are a lot of Bruce influenced bands/albums about this year.
Elsa Hewitt: electornica with vocals. The good bits are great, the less good bits are a tad dull.
Kit Sebastian: the second album of their Turkish influenced psych-jazz. Groovy!
Jerry David DeCicca: excellent. Sort of Americana that reminds me of Kevin Morby in style, at times. Wellworth a listen or three.
Eins und Zwei und Drei und Vier (compilation): German synthpop and post-punk from the early 80s. Good fun!
Explosions in the Sky: interesting in that it's largely the quiet parts of their quiet-loud things. Still, enjoyable and worthwhile.
Do What You Love (compilation): a compilation celebrating 25 years of Trunk Records. That means weird exotica, soundtrack pieces and all manner of the kitsch and the weird. Dudley Moore and Mike & Bernie Winters feature (but no Schnorbitz).

Album of the week: probably Jerry David DeCicca.
