New Music Releases Thread

Means nothing. Feldman has also produced for Ashlee Simpson, Hilary Duff and Avicii. None of them are punk.

Tim Armstrong wrote “Trouble” for Pink, it doesn’t make her punk either.

I don’t actually think Avril is punk at all, but I do think this latest song is “pop punk” in its style.

The thing with Avril is you can’t label her as one particular style.

The first two albums were pop rock, the third was pop punk maybe, and the last album had a lot of jazz influence.

90s so-Cal skate-punk/pop-punk was my first love, music-wise. I’ll never recognise Avril within that sphere, although I did enjoy Machine Gun Kelly’s last album and he’s involved in this as well IIRC.

It was Avril who introduced the whole skate-punk/pop-punk sound to the early 00’s pop scene. A lot of people maybe yourself included criticised her for that, but she was a fan of that music at that time therefore was always just being herself.

I’ve never heard any of MGK’s music, and yes he’s been in the studio with Avril. This has the makings of a very exciting album.

My description of Wares was rubbish, what did you think of Stuck?

Also enjoying Landowner - Consultant. May be worth a listen
By the way, forgot to say we gave Landowner a go last Sunday. Liked it. The missus gave the description that she liked it because it scared her , much in the same way that Black Country, New Road had when I played it for her the previous evening, presumably based on the angsty, slightly unhinged, spoken-word delivery. We both actually preferred the music of Landowner - she's a post-punk nut and I'm less comfortable with BCNR's forays into sax-led "jazz" at times even though I like most of it. Will definitely revisit, so thanks for the tip.

No worries. I’m really looking forward to BCNR, February 5th I think.

I do think the wanky sax stuff is a bit OTT at times, but they are growing into their sound, they have real talent. And are very fun live

Right, my new and newish stuff I've listened to of late...

Viagra Boys - it's a bit the singles are the best things on it. They do what they usually do, just not sure how good the songs are.
Steve Earle - a fitting tribute to his late son. I've always been more of a fan of Steve than Justin so think I prefer a lot of the songs done this way.
Casper Clausen - starts off great then meanders at times. It's a lot more motorik/electronic than Efterklang have ever been. Pretty good in spite of the meandering.
Skyway Man - apparently some sort of rock opera/concept thing. It's good. A little bit orchestrated psychedelia thing, goes sort of reggaeish briefly then returns. One for fans of Grizzly Bear et al.
Mogollar - Turkish psych-folk veterans. They've done a carrer retrospective but re-recorded the songs. It's got a good vibe going on.
The Dirty Nil - I like this. Big riffs, big hooks. Wikipedia reckons they're punk.
Hilang Child - he's a half Welsh, half Indonesian singer-songwriter. It's released on Bella Union and sounds like it's from that lable. Quite laid back, a little bit psychedelic. Generally, enjoyable.
Aaron Frazer - a really good album of retro soul type stuff. His day job is drummer for Durand Jones & the Indications, so he's not moved field too far. Produced by Dan Auerbach. Very good!
Cunning Folk - south London psych folk type (he's played with Circulus and has connections to Stick In The Wheel). This goes a bit epic. Long songs, which never outstay their welcome. The closer almost has a doom metal vibe. Excellent

AOTW: probably Aaron Frazer but Cunning Folk, Skyway Man and The Dirty Nil aren't far behind. Steve Earle also...
