Neither - massive libertarian, if anything. Doesn’t like either side.Massive Tory isn’t he?
Their best album Since Yield For me - I’ve even stopped skipping Somethimg SpecialIts a brilliant record. Had it on every day since release and often more than once. love it.
Debut album from Rachel Chinouriri out too. Caught the eye with solid reviews on metacritic. Breezy indie-pop, very much fitting in with the current female singer landscape. A little Lily Allen here, a little early Coldplay there, more upbeat elsewhere. An enjoyable listen for a Sunday morning. File under "promising" regarding her...There are new albums tomorrow from Camera Obscura, Charlotte Day Wilson, Dua Lipa, Hana Vu, Ibibio Sound Machine, Jessica Pratt, John Carpenter, Kamasi Washington, Mdou Moctar, P.O.D., Sia, The Lemon Twigs, Jon McKiel, Emily Barker, Mammoth Penguins, Broadcast (Collected Demos), Karate Boogaloo and Kee Avil.
Rhe weekly review:
Adam Wiltzie: modern classical from the Stars of the Lid and A Winged Victory for the Sullen man. Very good.
Jon McKiel: I like this. He uses collage techniques for some fairly poppy songs. Interesting.
Ibibio Sound Machine: they're quietly becoming a top notch studio band, as well as an excellent live act. A bit more Afrobeat than their last album.
Frank Turner: standard stuff, some punky tracks, some a bit folkie. Decent enough but it's been a few albums since he's been at the top of his game.
Emily Barker: Very good. Gentle, reflective ballads.
Mammoth Penguins: their fourth album of bouncy (mostly) indiepop. Pretty good.
Yosa Peit: this one is very interesting. Sparse, sometimes harsh electronica with female vocals. Reminds me of older Arca records.
Broadcast: exceptionally good, especially given that it's demos, song fragments etc. Some things here are extremely exciting.
Kamasi Washington: cosmic jazz. At 85 minutes, it's brief for Kamasi but it does go on a little bit. Might be best listened to in bursts.
Mdou Moctar: terrific. Highly political it seems and the guitar is exceptionally good,
The Lemon Twigs: their most obviously 60s influenced album yet. The songs are good and the harmonies great.
Karate Boogaloo: laidback, instrumental retro soul. Has a bit of a Khruangbin vibe.
Kee Avil: guitar, electronics, vocals, sometimes unsettling, frequently beautiful.
Camera Obscura: comfortable slippers, soulful indiepop. They're very good at this stuff
Jessica Pratt: a little more diverse than her earlier albums. Her voice is terrific and the songs really good. Maybe a little brief.
Album of the week: I'll say Broadcast shading it from Mdou Moctar.Ibibio Sound Machine and Jessica Pratt also very good and Emily Barker, Yosa Peit and Kee Avil all make me want to listen more.
