New Music Releases Thread

PJ Harvey will be in my top 10. This tiny desk performance appeared on youtube today. It's fantastic. 4 songs from the new album and finishing off with an old one (White Chalk).

A quick skirt through the new stuff I've listened to this week. Things seem to be quietening a little in terms of new releases...

Julie Byrne & Laugh Cry Laugh - an EP, high quality songs, only 4 of them.
Kurt Vile - an EP supposedly but at 9 songs and 52 minutes, an album really. It's up to his usual standard. Includes Kurt's attempt at a Christmas song.
Spearmint - good as always. They remain one of Britain's great should be heard more bands. Maybe a little more downbeat than usual.
The Polyphonic Spree - the Spree are back and sound exactly like they always do. Uplifting, big choruses, a bit full on.
Montanera - featured in yesterday's Observer, coincidentally. She's Colombian but London based. Synthy layers, female vocals in Spanish, influenced by both Latin America and west Africa. Very impressive!
Orbiting Human Circus - essentially, the alter ego of Julian Koster (ex-Neutral Milk Hotel), this is rather good. Kind of smoky, retro jazz, along with synthy interludes. Intriguing.
Monde UFO - more jazz adjacent stuff, This features spoken word vocals. Again, very good.
Smoke Fairies - continuing there path of combining British folk with west coast Americana, this is another impressive album. The harmony vocals are always tremendous.
Iron & Wine - a live album that acts an an accompaniment to a concert film. I suspect the film contains more of the between song stuff. This acts as a reminder of how good Iron & Wine are.
Matt Berry - eleven instrumental tracks that are groovy enough to fit into the soundtrack of Toast (of anywhere).
Beatowls - not the best puntastic band name. Glacial synths and girl/boy vocals the name of the game and this is pretty impressive stuff.
Luther Dickinson - the North Mississippi Allstars mainman has made an album for children. Mostly traditional songs, it's rather enjoyable.

Album of the week: a tricky one as there's nothing bad there but nothing jaw droppingly awesome. I'm just favouring Montanera over Beatowls.

It came out in June but I've just been listening to it recently. Her older (mainly piano) stuff is also fantastic.
Shida Shahabi - Deep Violet Of Gold (from the album Living Circles)

I think this may be the first year since I was a kid that I haven't yet found a debut album I really enjoy. I did like Modern Cosmology, Unthank:Smith and The WAEVE albums but they are collaborations so don't really count. Any suggestions?

Mock Media record is solid. It's like some sort of Crack Cloud x The Clash mash up (maybe shamefully so at times!).When it's good it's very good.

Frog record is good, though second half of it is miles higher in quality than the first.

It seems to have gone under the radar a bit, but Beirut put a new record out last week as well and as usual it's bloody lovely.
The Drums' new record is surprisingly good. Interesting album cover as well.

The end of year release slowdown is starting to kick in. There are albums tomorrow from Busta Rhymes, Guided By Voices, Spector, Psychedelic Porn Crumpets, Trampolene, The Still Brothers, Raze Regal & White Denim Inc., Pete Molinari, Ghost Woman, Lawrence English/Werner Dafeldecker, Kirk Barley and Daniel Bachman.

Not sure how much chance I'll get to listen to anything as I'm off to Uruguay for work this afternoon.
