New Music Releases Thread

Never heard Bob Vylan or heard of them so checked out on your suggestion. Sounds very good.
Yeah they are great, unfortunately my mates didn’t agree when I saw them support The Offspring. I was bigging up BV for weeks only for none of them to get it.

I reckon Bobby had more of a middle class upbringing than he lets on - for only having released 2 EPs his house and car look very nice on Insta.

I really love this lot

The debut album was sadly overlooked I thought... nobody's fault it came out the week after lockdown numero uno was announced and the world was falling to bits.
Another band I'd never heard of until you posted that. I like it and will check out further. That and Bob Vylan are 2 really good discoveries for me today. Nice one!

You’re welcome

Sorry have a decent back catalogue despite only having one full record out - 925 is the debut album from 2020 then they put out a cracking EP Twixtustwain last year along with a pair of mixtapes (Home Demons Vol 1 & 2) from several years ago that were previously only on YouTube because of copyright issues around their use of uncleared samples

They write proper pop singles (‘Starstruck’, ‘Right Round The Clock’) as well as they do brilliantly mad shit that radio wouldn’t ordinarily go near

One listen each to Bob and Gizz.

Bob Vylan has drawn me in instantly, very impressed. One of the most exciting bands in the U.K. at the moment, still baffled as to how all my mates think they are shite.

Gizz feels a bit like a “best of” of new songs, it’s like they’ve recorded songs in the style of each of their albums and put it all into one album, if that makes sense? For example “Presumptuous” sounds a bit like it should be on either Paper Mache Dream Balloon or Oddments, “Dripping Tap” from Quarters, “Predators” from Infest the Rats Nest etc

Yes, really impressed with Bob Vylan -
'No liberal lefty c***
Is gonna tell me punching Nazis ain't the way'.

Less impressed with Fontaines DC. Its pretty drab. When they came out they were fresh with lots of spiky songs. Now they are pretty drab but the music press utterly fawms over them. Is it because there is so little competition for indie guitar bands? Listen to Whipping Boy from Dublin in the '90's. They are what Fontaines' would like to be but, after the first album, just don't have the songs.

Their “We Live Here” EP is an absolute cracker as well. If you like that lyric from Pretty Songs, then you’ll love the title track on “We Live Here” -
Not a racist, you're just proud
Why should you be left out?
The fairies get a march
And the nig-nogs get a month
We've got the right to vote
I mean, what more could we want?

Completely agree with Fontaines. I'm very disappointed. Been listening to the first two albums all week and I rarely read reviews ahead of a listen myself. The reviews are very very good and I'm just not hearing what I have been reading. Kept waiting for the album to "start" but it just didn't...

You have to wonder if they're suffering from 3 albums (and a live album) in 3 years - that's rare these days (except for maybe the likes of Gizzard, Osees, etc) and maybe they don't have the depth of material to pull it off.

My weekly review of the new stuff I've listened to:

Spiritualized: it's a Spiritualized album, it's bloody magnificent! That is all...
Psychedelic Porn Crumpets: psych-rock, heavily influenced by the rockier end of Gizzard's work. Enjoyable.
Fontaines DC: I'm going to go against the thread consensus so far and say that this is excellent, possibly their best so far. I like the fact that they're evolving and taking in other elements (touches of folk etc.). An exceptional band.
The Lazy Eyes: whilst Psychedelic Porn Crumpets are Gizzard influenced, I'd describe The Lazy Eyes as post-Gizzard. They're maybe a bit less rocky but they're young Australian and clearly influenced by contemporary Australian bands. In saying that, good album.
Large Plants: a solo project from Jack Sharp of Wolf People (who I think have split). It's psych rock but maybe a bit less Sabbath informed and more influenced by folkier bands.
Taj Mahal & Ry Cooder: two old fellas, who are pretty much masters of their craft having fun playing music together. Really enjoyable!
Joshua Hedley: old school country rock. Even has a track called 'Country & Western'. Good fun!
James Heather: neo-classical piano pieces. A bit Max Richter. Good on early listens.
Kathryn Joseph: stark, keyboardy, great vocals, very intimate sounding.
Tony Price: urban electronica, vaguely reminiscent of Jon Hopkins less ambient work. Good.
Old Crow Medicine Show: they continue to be masters of modern bluegrass. Probably broadened their palate a bit here. Excellent songs.
Wet Tuna: sort of psyxhedelic folk that's kind of mutated into something akin to Nixon era Lambchop. Early listening suggests something very good. They're on the improve!
King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard: as mentioned by @Mickdundee this seems to sound like tracks from throughout their career, plus some rap-rock tracks, which I'm not sure is needed. Pretty good, overly long though.
Bob Vylan: shouty, angry, punky fun. Excellent!
S. Carey: Bon Iver side man makes album that sounds like early Bon Iver. Nice songs.
Africa Negra: the sound of Sao Tome and Principe. A mix of rumba, highlife and other sounds. Totally joyous!
Oran Ambarchi/Johan Berthling/Andreas Werlin: motorik jazz, basically. Exceptionally good.

Album of the week: well, that's Spiritualized but there are several others that are potentially yearly list worthy.
