Aside from the Laura Jane Grace EP, there are new releases this week from Alessia Cara, Amon Tobin, Andy Shauf, Angels & Airwaves, Boys Noize, Caleb Landry Jones, Dave Okumu, Esperanza Spalding, Jesse Malin, Mas Aya, Nao, Poppy, Public Service Broadcasting, Quicksand, Sufjan Stevens & Angelo de Augustine, The Body and BIG|BRAVE, The Shivas, I'll Be Your Mirror (Velvet Underground tribute album), William Shatner, Spencer Cullum, Nolan Potter, Hayden Pedigo, The Rugged Nuggets, Holy Hive, Mac McCaughan, Native Soul, Brigid Mae Power, Kondi Band, Blancmange, Suuns and Alabama 3.
Not bad

it’s all about Sufjan/Angelo, but will give a listen to Andy Shauf, PSB, Suuns and BMP

any other suggestions?

I’m all over the psb release, an lp in three acts taking the pages of rory macleans book ‘Berlin’ and giving them a musical interruption recorded at hansa studios… its a concept right up my strasse…

The I'll Be Your Mirror comp is the obvious thing. Some good people on there: Kurt Vile, Michael Stipe, Matt Berninger, Fontaines DC, Sharon van Etten, Thurston Moore and more.

Nolan Potter is good and Spencer Cullum is hotly tipped. Kondi Band if you want an African vibe.

Spearmint have an album out as well and I know you like em.

I had no idea they were anything more than a one hit wonder band. Wiki tells me they’ve been going since the 80s. You learn something new every day.
Yeah, they've been the definition of plugging away. Their first album is a bit of a departure - 80s UK indie sound to it. The rest are very much in the "74-75" ilk of American jangle pop (Ring, with 74-75, Slackjawed, and New Boy, being the standout)

same mate, I listened to their live session on Steve Lamacq this week and it’s shaping up to be the best thing they’ve done ( and I’m a huge fan of everything they’ve done so far )
Really looking forward to hearing some of the more concept tracks on it.

Quite a lot to go through from this week:

Bela Fleck: a bluegrass album essentially. It lasts about an hour and three quarters and seems like a bit of a jam session. Probably a lot of fun to record.
Adia Victoria: very good indeed. Sort of Americana/blues based album which I think has some sort of concept running through it. Highly recommended.
Buffalo Daughter: arthouse indie kind of thing. They're Japanese and critically acclaimed. Same sort of vibe as Deerhoof.
Mouth Painter: They're an Americana trio consisting of pedal steel, bass, flute and vocals. Lovely warm stuff, very well made. Excellent!
Injury Reserve: mentioned up the thread. Experimental hiphop. Very good, especially when it gets a little psychedelic.
RW Hedges: veteran singer/songwriter, somewhat in thrall to the Beatles but a bit folky. Enjoyable.
Moor Mother: American poet and activist, musically this kind of fits into experimental hiphop (vaguely). It's good anyway.
The Felice Brothers: one of my favourite bands and another fine, fine album. A couple of great list songs on here. They should be much, much more widely known!
Jose Gonzalez: his first release in quite a while and possibly his best album. Much the same technique as before but it seems a bit meatier.
Alicia Walter: This is a lot of fun. She kind of combines electronica with, at times, showtunes. Witty and engaging right throughout.
Alexis Taylor: the Hot Chip font man has gone into full on quiet and snuggly mode. As expected, good, although not particularly upbeat.
Tre Burt: a blues/Americana debut. Reminds me a lot of Willy Mason musically. Highly promising!
Jeffrey Alexander and the Heavy Lidders: the main man is a veteran of several US psych rock bands. His latest project is, well, sort of psych rock. A couple of tracks in the middle have a Glasgow indie vibe to them, others much more out there rock.
Charley Crockett: proper old school country, which could have been made at any time between 1954 and 2064. Really good fun!
Immersion: kind of ambient krautrock. Malka Spigel, of Minimal Compact and Colin Newman, of Wire, are central to this with contributions from Tarwater. Laetitia Sadier, Ulrich Schnauss and Scanner. Very enjoyable and engaging.
Amythyst Kiah: could easily be filed alongside the Adia Victoria album. Another Americana/blues kind of thing. Really good!
Stick in the Wheel: continuing their experiments in melding old school British folk with electronic sounds, this is a bit more low key than previous releases. Needs more listens.
Bob Dylan: the usual bootlegs thing of outtakes, alternate takes etc. From the early 80s so based around the Shot of Love, Infidels and Empire Burlesque sessions.
Cameroon Garage Funk (compilation): fairly self explanatory in that it's 1970s Cameroonian funk, recorded wherever was available. Lots of great tunes and James Brown-ish call and response stuff. Really good!
Mono: they seem to be a bit louder than they often have been on this. Still fundamentally the same base idea though - quiet/loud post-rock which is pretty much all instrumental. Terrific!

Album of the week: a three way tie between Mouth Painter, The Felice Brothers and Mono. There's a lot of excellence elsewhere though.
Off to see Scritti Politti next week and Alexis Taylor is supporting- looking forward even more now. Probably first time I’ve seen ‘same’ support act in different, consecutive gigs. Hot Chip we’re supporting New Order a couple of weeks

New Ben Lee single (Born for this Bullshit) and album announcement (June 2022 ) today.

From the video I thought he was going into Psych-rock territory but it’s more bizarre acoustic-pop territory.

There’s also the first album in 20 years from The Ziggens. They are the band who originally sung “Big Salty Tears” which is best known as a Sublime song. Punk/surf/rockabilly/country/ska fusion.

Some youtube algorithm put me onto an Argentinian band/solo project (difficult to get details tbh) called Black Sky Giant- instrumental stoner/psychadelic/space/desert rock sort of thing.
worth a listen if you're that way inclined

two self-released LP's in 2021 - Falling Mothership, and Planet Terror
