New Music Releases Thread

Owen is on my list for the next few days. Thus far:

Josh Kimbrough: I thought it made sense, in a week of big releases, to start off with some lovely folkish guitar instrumentals. Well worth a listen!
Jockstrap: the new EP is kind of good but kind of unsettling. I've yet to totoally make my mind up about them.
Sebastian Tellier: drab.
Phoebe Bridgers: excellent! She's an exceptional lyricist.
Neil Young: lovely as expected. Really pleased this has seen the light of day.

Don't think I've ever given a potted review of an album with just four letters and a full stop before.

Slowly working through new stuff after the above. Have listened to:

Braids - they've added some orchestration and guitar to their usual synth stuff. It's a good listen.
Disheveled Cuss - late 90s alt rock, basically, with some properly catchy tunes. Great!
Bob Dylan - an early couple of listens suggest this is the best of his post-millennium career so near enough a masterpiece.
Darkstar - low key vocal led electronica. Doesn't really push any boundaries but very good.
Hedvig Mollestad Trio - I wasn't sure where to start so went with the most recent album, "Smells Funny". Excellent. They get described as jazz but are pretty much instrumental heavy rock. She has a solo album out in a couple of weeks.
Sven Wunder - Swedish bloke does a laid back psych/Balkan/Turkish jazzish album. The world listens in its millions! Very good indeed.
The Phenomenal Handclap Band - it's their first in 7 years (think they may have split and reformed). They get described as psychedelic soul, which is a fair summation. At their best when the vocals get a bit chanty.
Borrowed Books - a collaboration between Cam Fraser, once of late 80s Scottish punks The Cateran, and Mr. Ray Neal, of Miracle Legion. Reminds me a hell of a lot of peak Buffalo Tom, which means it's ace, in a slightly pre-grunge US alt-rock way.
Wesley Gonzalez - the former Let's Wrestle man continues his DIY skronk pop approach. Enjoyable but I preferred early Let's Wrestle.
Minnie Birch - folkish versions of songs with football connotations (whether songs written about football or songs that have been used as terrace chants). This is a lovely half hour or so of music.

Still a few more I want to listen to - Grand Veymont's 39 minute single track album, Wire, Owen, Gia Margaret, Box of Chocolates (the band WIll Oldham was in 30 years or so back).

Are your days 48 hours long?

So, the final five:

Grand Veymont - part Stereolab, part Arcade Fire, pretty much ace, one track holds your attention for 39 minutes.
Wire - it's good. A mix of rerecorded tracks from previous albums and things that missed the cut first time round. Sounds like a current day Wire album, unsuprisingly.
Owen - singer songwriter stuff, good, a little bit emo.
Gia Margaret - electronica, pleasant, the last track with vocals on is lovely.
Box Of Chocolates - arthouse indie from 30 years ago. They were a collective of sort, including Will Oldham. Possibly of limited interest.

Album of the week: that'd be Dylan, although Phoebe Bridgers, Borrowed Books, Minnie Birch and Grand Veymont all could have been in a different week.

The good news - Phoebe Bridgers has definitely grown on me, have it another 2 listens yesterday and it’s starting to click.

The bad news - I cant get into the Dylan record. 3 attempts and I think the furthest I’ve got is track 5 before giving up. I’m just not seeing what other people are seeing. This is probably how a lot of the rest of this thread felt about Fiona Apple.

Enjoying Gum Country though - it’s a The Courtneys side project in case anyone else is interested.

This Grand Vermont album is probably the most gloriously self indulgent record I have heard in years.
@Arkle suggested Borrowed Books, they’re good

Cant remember if I recommended Post Louis or not

Hum - Inlet.
Quite enjoying this. Not a band I knew but liked the description so gave it a blast. Not sure where you'd pigeonhole it as there's shoegaze, post-rock instrumentation, grunge and various other things going on. First album by them in 22 years apparently. Doesn't seem to be on Spotify but you can stream it on Pitchfork

Seen my emo communities going nuts for it. Will listen tomorrow
