New Music Releases Thread

Thanks, I must have a listen to that as I've seen the track listings. John Peel/Janice Long/David Jensen sessions take me back to my youth.
I saw there was one session that I definitely recorded off the radio at the time, sitting patiently through the whole show, finger poised. Played it a lot at the time, but the tape is long since lost, so I'm looking forward to finally having a "proper" version, even if I have to wait until November! Off to see him 3 nights this week in NYC - it's a long way from Consett Empire in the midst of the miners' strike and Red Wedge.

New releases this week from Alessandro Cortini, Beth Hart, DragonForce, Girl Band, Jon Pardi. Kanye West, Kristin Chenoweth, Moon Duo, Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds (an EP), Opeth, Steel Panther, Sturgill Simpson, Tegan and Sara, Telefon Tel Aviv, Temples, The New Pornographers, Vagabon, Wallis Bird, Wednesday 13, Whiskey Myers, Young MA, Otava Yo, Red River Dialect, Kefaya & Elaha Soroor, Ronin Arkestra and The Monochrome Set.

Moon duo been getting great reviews and apparently it’s a slight change in direction for them.

This week I’ve been listening to

Juan Maclean. Good house music. Got a bit of an older feel about it

Complete walkthru. Bit orbital ish. Worth a listen.

Not as much new stuff this week as I’ve mostly been back on the black Midi album after watching them on mercury music prize

New Pornos and Steel Panther for me; Sturgill and Dragonforce if I have time but I’m off to see Gizzard on Tuesday so might also spend some time refamiliarising myself with some of their stuff I play less often.

Is that a new album by Juan Maclean? I got a CD by him years ago and liked it.

Other than M83 (not very good), not sure I listed new stuff I listened to last week...

Giant Sand - they seem to be re-recording their back-catalogue. This is early album "Thin Line Man" redone. It's pretty good but I'd prefer something new from Howe Gelb.
Ebony Steel Band - if you only ever listen to one album of a steel band covering Kraftwerk tracks make it"Pan Machine" by Ebony Steel Band. It's a joyful listen!
Joe Armon-Jones - second solo album from a founder of Ezra Collective. It's Brit jazz. Maybe a little more old school than Sone of Kemet et al but very good.
One Eleven Heavy - something of a psych-country supergroup. Well worth listening to...
Brittany Howard - this is properly good! Her solo debut frees her from the blues rock of Alabama Shakes into Prince territory.
Hiss Golden Messenger - nothing that breaks the HGM mold. Warm, uplifting well conceived, well played songs.
One True Pairing - the other vocalist from WIld Beasts solo. It's decent enough, I guess. Manages to be simultaneously quite very and very quite.
Efterklang - their first in a while and their first in their native Danish. It's an exceptional album in any language.
David Kilgour and the Heavy Eights - the Kiwi/Flying Nun veteran returns with his first in 5 years. Wistful, enjoyable Antipodean indie chamber pop.
Imaginational Anthems Vol 9 (Ryley Walker Presents) - the Tompkins Square label puts out these compilations of largely acoustic tracks every so often. They're usually themed but this one is compiled by Ryley Walker. Mostly instrumental but there's a nice cover of "Walking My Cat Named Dog" in the middle for shits and giggles.

Anyway, Ebony Steel Band, Brittany Howard, Hiss Golden Messenger (generally), Efterklang and David Kilgour all highly recommended for anyone with Joe Armon-Jones, One Eleven Heavy and the Ryley Walker comp for specialist audiences.

Juliana Hatfield has an album of Police covers coming out shortly (Nov 15) as follow-up to the ONJ album. She previewed a single, Next to You, yesterday. Got some nice fuzzy guitar on it.

Fatcat just announced they're releasing Killed My Parents and Hit the Road by The Twilight Sad on vinyl for the first time. Weirdly, also Nov 15.

The Monochrome set! Jesus are they still going? Wonder what they do to earn money?

Listening to the Joe Armon-Jones right now and so far I really like it. Thanks for the intro, first time I've heard of this.

The new Moon Duo album Stars Are The Light, which I think came out today, is rather special. Can’t wait for their Sage gig

Also enjoying the One Eleven Heaven album, definitely one for the Grateful Dead fans

This (Sandy) Alex G record feels half finished but when it's good it's very good. Would recommend.

Didn't realise there was a new Virginia Wing record out this year too. Only listened to half but it's a bit more chilled, more spoken word in the style of Jenny Hval.

Not in any way new music but somehow found myself listening to Dancing for Mental Health by Will Powers. It's from 1983, there's songs produced by Nike Rogers and its fuckin brilliant.
