I bet you were one of the many who thought the Olympic Stadium would be a white elephant. I wasn't.

Birmingham City first played in League Division 3 in the 1989/90 season.

I get why people are fixated by the overall capacity of the stadium mate, but that doesn’t actually mean there will be 60000 seats available for Birmingham home games.

The owners might initially only make 40000 seats available for home games, with 20,000 seats in the upper tiers hidden by large screens. I believe this is something that Atlanta do when the MLS team are playing in the Mercedes stadium, rather than the NFL team.

By building big though not only are they future proofing in the unlikely event they are successful, but they will now likely command all the rights to big gigs in the midlands. In addition, they may well land NFL games.

With regards to Birmingham’s support: I think they attracted 27000 (their biggest crowd in years) against us in Feb. Given the size of the City, it’s quite feasible that not only could they cement that support with a new stadium; but they could add another 10,000-15,000 through sensible pricing.

In any case, if Birmingham had a brand new stadium that debuted in League One , the novelty factor alone would fill it and if they continued to win games, especially with cheap tickets, it would sell out.
You might be surprised!
 
A new stadium could possibly attract lapsed, untapped support. It could add another 10,000 + to their gates .It did with us.
40,000 would be well big enough like.

People are thinking new stadium like SOL but it won't be just a new stadium. It will offer more than just a footy game but they could still easily sell more tickets. They could have very cheap tickets in parts of the ground, especially kids tickets and premium prices for better seats/facilities for those with the money.

The difference being is that they will also be somewhere fans can go before and after the game and spend even more money.
The club say the site will have "a new multi-use stadium, high-performance training facilities and other mixed-use real estate development including a range of entertainment options".

Googling for more info about the site, I found this article albeit about the old proposal.

More relevant to the grand goals of Tom Wagner, Tom Brady, and Knighthead is the even earlier attempts to build an enormous stadium. Waiting on a casino licence from the government, the arena was never built.

It was in response for a 'super-casino' which would have housed over 1,250 slot machines, and came with a £217million plan from the council. The Blues chiefs, working with American gambling and resort company Las Vegas Sands, aimed to put the casino into part of a huge 59-acre complex at Wheels Oark.

There were further plans for an Olympic-size swimming pool also with foundations to host rugby and athletics tournaments as well as concerts. Chief executive at the time, Karren Brady, said: "It's not just a stadium, it's not a casino, it's much more than that, it's a village of sporting opportunities for Birmingham.

"It will help us host events in the future like the Commonwealth Games and will be so important if we are going to attract international athletes here in preparation for 2012."

Yeah possibly in what way? The main fault is the space when getting a drinks, it’s not big enough, but they can’t really do much can they?

I think we’ve gone from a stadium and city landmark to be proud of to something that has become a bit of an eyesore from 3/4 of the viewpoints of it.

The way clubs and stadiums are going now, having just a bog standard ground is losing money rather than maximising profit and use. be plenty grounds springing up that are multipurpose and are set up to take as much money as possible regardless of the event.
Arsenal showed everyone the way when they were the first of the mega stadiums, spurs have taken it to new levels.
Even when teams get to the prem league they then have to compete with the off field revenues clubs are bringing in outside of the traditional shirt sponsors

Having a stadium that’s used maybe 35 times a year is a waste of the rest of the year round revenue that’s potentially available and it’s a good way of stretching the ffp, bring more off field revenue in means more on field investment

They could expand outwards to open up concourse space and renew and improve the space for vendors inside. With that type of construction there’d likely be aesthetic improvements to the exterior of the east / south as well. Hospitality in the east had been mooted (and really might be required to keep the big gigs going forward and to make more cash).

Obviously all of that would require serious investment and sadly I don’t see it coming.

If I’m understanding correctly what you mean wouldn’t that essentially just be the rebuilding of the whole structure though? Like isn’t that just fundamentally the design of the stadium
