National Glass Centre to move

Despite the fact that we’re potentially losing a centre of national importance which celebrates the city’s rich history in the art of glass making in a prominent position on the banks of the river, judging by the comments on here, the majority don’t seem to give a shit. Odd? 🤷🏻‍♂️

I took it from the article that we are not losing the centre (the uses will be retained) just the building.

Definitely, it could be design, could be structural design (although I doubt that).
Unless it's design and build the construction company won't be at fault. Designers/architects often specify suppliers for specialist materials (like that glass roof) and the builder would just build to specifications.
There could be 100 reasons.

The original architects were Gollifer Langston based in Soho, who won some awards for its design. When the building opened the roof was a problem, first leaking then loose panes. It was reported in Private Eye, but the rest of the media mainly ignored it all. The architects blamed the builders and the builders blamed the architects! The roof was 'fixed' in 2003, but it appears the problems resurfaced with one pane dropping from the roof into the shop area a few years back. No one was hurt though. It was closed briefly while they sorted it out, however, the problem has resurfaced.

It may be that there is movement in the foundations which upset the roof settings making it a danger. It may be a design fault in the roof, then again it may be aliens ... No doubt Private Eye will once again be where the real story is told ...

I wonder just how many of these Millenium projects have lasted ?
The other thing I wonder is exactly who owns the prime piece of land that it is built on ?

Personally I think this is a big blow to the city’s prestige amongst all the admitted justified optimism.
A landmark building hosting something of national importance in such a prominent location in the city apparently now having to be demolished.
Regardless of who’s to blame it just doesn’t sit well.
