National Glass Centre to move

I think it’s a real shame that the NGC looks doomed. Nice building, great location and really enjoy popping in for a look around and a coffee.

How can this be after only 25 years!?! It’s clear they’re going to just dump part of it in the new Culture House so it’s a net loss in real terms.
 

Are they suggesting to move the glass blowing workshops to culture house ? I thought that the massive chimneys were part of the furnaces for the glass making, are they going to clash a couple of them ontop of culture house ?
 
Shame. The NGS has been part of my Sunday plans for a long time. Me mam loves a coffee there and a look around the little shop. She's 90yrs old now and we're restricted in the places that we can get to these days. She'll be gutted.

Done the glassblowing a few times too and even managed to hold onto the Christmas decorations we made.

I suppose a more central location might increase footfall.

The present location is major part of the draw
Central location won’t provide this
I’ve read it’s £45m to rectify the issues
Surely a new structure wouldn’t cost that
I wonder how much the university actually wants to keep it open??
Where’s levelling up when you need it
There’s always money available for these sort of things when push comes to shove

It is all just a little take our word for it at the moment. It's also very easy to ensure the external report includes the headline figure you're after to justify the move while there's an opportunity to do so. i.e. more cost-effective over 50 years.

Right now we know they're looking to move within the next three years; so we know that structurally the building is perfectly safe for that amount of time at the very least. But what about beyond that? Have they actually been told the building is unsafe for another 5, 10, 15?

I just struggle to believe that anyone would sanction a £2.3m refurb in 2013 and not be aware these issues could force the venue to close 10 years later.

Sounds like the university want to wash there hands of it so are doing all they can to justify downgrading it and moving
Is this not what levelling up was all about
Unless of course the eu funds have run out!!

The university would need about 5000 ceramics students to generate £45m income. That's before the cost of teaching/running it. I don't think it'll be an option.
