Most existing Safc player in your time

Problem with him was he never wanted to be a bully. Far to laid back for my liking.just wished he had a temper such as John Hartson. He underachieved massively in his career imo. Shame.

4 pages before Brady was mentioned. I'm very surprised.
Brady is number one for me , its just that you cant give him that accolade because of the length of time he played....he did have a tendancy to drift out of games but he was young and just learning.......we will never know if he would have ever of made it to the big time or if he would become another Gasgoignesque idol. I would imagine apart from a few Sunderland fans in that era that know one else in the UK would have heard of him

Harry Hooper, Gerge Herd, Brian Clough, Johnny Crossan, Jim Baxter.

5 good uns there mind.
Dennis was a magnificent attacking player who could go past defenders either way, had a fair bit of pace and was brave. As he matured, long after he left SAFC, he became a very, very effective midfielder with a mean, some might say nasty streak.
But his most "exciting" period as a player was definitely with us and his first couple of seasons with Man City.
A true Lads legend and his decision to go for a move as we struggled to win promotion after the Cup win should not be held against him. He was more ambitious than the club, that's all.

Yes you are right about Denis. He had his head screwed on and knew what he wanted. I may have mentioned this before, and do not apologise for it again, someone asked Tommy Smith the Liverpool great about wingers going out of the game. He disagreed and said have you seen the two lads at Sunderland.

Billy Hughes and Dennis Tueart were exciting when I was a bairn. Marco is the most exciting player I've seen as an adult. The way he ran at people and refusal to go down in those first couple of seasons was truly thrilling, Phillips was brilliant and scored more goals but Msrco was a spectacle. Gutted when he left, especially to the loathsome Palace.

I still struggle to compare anyone to Marco. An absolute beast, got me hooked on safc. Imagine marking the fecker!!!

Relative to the level he was at, McGeady was exciting as fuck - quick feet, flair, could go past defenders, pinpoint crossing and capable of quality goals.

Overall, Phillips from 97 to 2000 when he had bags of pace and seemed to score every type of goal going. Bridges' footwork was sublime, and Sess when he was 'on it'.

Steed as well, moved in slow motion but was class on the ball.

Has anyone mentioned Son of Pele, and his "educated left foot" ?

A proper fave of mine but never given a proper chance under Reidy

Otherwise Billy Hughes, a true legend

I'd started going the season before we got Marco so I had Dave Buchanan as my first idol! But seriously, Marco was so exciting for me as 12/13 year old lad at Roker. Still got my signed 'Marco Goalo' magazine the club brought out back then. I think your first heroes as a kid always stick with you.
