Mortimer & Whitehouse Gone Fishing

It's got me curious to try fishing that's how good it is.
Naaaaaaah. Curious to try fishing with those two mebbes but not fishing.
Fishing or golf is universally recognised as merely a way of keeping out of the house. I’ve known a few fanatical golfers n fisherman who lose interest in it once they’re divorced.
Totally agree but why is most of what they produce such utter shite .
Middle class self entitled arseholes still run the bbc. Lifelong Tory party member and long time Chairman of Hammersmith and Fulham Conservative Party is the top lad there. Their viewpoints are either too narrow or too patronising to a wider audience. Whitehouse n Mortimer started from somewhat humbler circumstances than the idiots who commission the shows.

As an aside Mortimer had me in tears on “Would I Lie To You” a few nights back with his tale of Chris Rea putting an egg in his bath. Undoubtedly ”The Greatest Living Smoggie” and I think 99% of Reeves n Mortimer is shite.

I should clarify - I'd not want to go alone. I'd want to hang out with a select friend or two as that is the beauty of it.

I'm not really a drinker, and as I get a bit older it's getting harder and harder to justify a few pints. The chance to have that same quality time with an old friend but with no beer is appealing.

Get somebody who knows what he's doing to teach you . The fishing fraternity are the friendliest bunch of folk and nobody is going to laugh at you .
Cheers mate! Sadly I live in a big city, so the fishing doesn't look quite as idyllic as home.

It’s a cracking sport and used to enjoy going with one of my Mates.
Got him on a private stretch of the Teme one of the most beautiful rivers in the Counrty. Barbel fishing and we used to fish up until midnight, pitch black and in the rural Worcestershire Countryside in the hop plantations.
I get the programme and fun, laughter and bloody ghost stories as it got dark were memorable. As soon as dusk came so did nature. Head torches on as noises in the bushes and undergrowth would get your mind running away.

A story to share that still brings us to this day in laughter.
We were fishing about 40 feet apart and my Mate was upstream fishing under a huge sycamore tree. Just as the sun went down I have never seen so many Jackdaws, must have been 500 or so, even more. Anyway they took up refuge in the Sycamore tree he was fishing right under. Both of us concealed in the undergrowth.
Anyway as soon as it was dark I got my catapult out and fired a weight right into the middle of the tree. Absolute carnage, Jackdaws in full flight and voice everywhere. Amongst the carnage, Malc’s Voice a loud “f***ing hell” as Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds was in full flow. I was in pieces, one of those laughing fits that is a combination of pain and feeling sick. Even typing this I am laughing it’s all part of the fun and relate to Mortimer & Whitehouse because it’s deeper than just fishing.
The wildlife and sights as you blend in are incredible and whenever I pack up I often stand and simply stare across the river and think, yes life is worth living.

Fair enough, I didn't know that
Tbf, if you listen to what he's been through it's clearly taken a toll. Whitehouse's joke about 'tell us what does work, it'll be quicker' wasn't far from the truth. The fact he can muster a laugh at all is impressive.

Just started watching. This is actually the first TV show I've watched for about 10 years, if not more. It's superb

My favourite programme this Christmas.
It gets to my inner soul and I’m a deep thinker - confession time.
That’s why I am so lucky that fishing found me.
Have to be thankful that my Grand Dad got me into the Countryside= Wild Birds, Fishing and dare say even shooting.

My son has just asked if I'd take him fishing. Any tips anyone? I'd be as much of a beginner as he is.

It was canny ,i think Bob is 70/30 on the entertainment value ,maybe someone who doesnt work to script as much

fishing as said is just a way to get out the house

First time out go to a place where it is easy to catch fish. A small commercial water. In addition it always helps when it is a little warmer as nothing worse freezing cold and not catching anything.
If only I was closer I would meet you both and help him catch.
Find a local tackle shop and most are run by competent anglers and would sort you out with the basic gear.
Best advice also is to use relatively small hooks (size 18 or 16) as this is where most novices go wrong the hooks are far too big. Use maggots and feed a few in where you are fishing to entice the fish to move where your bait is.
Even better if you know an angler or if one is fishing they are generally decent and always willing to help.

Superb stuff thanks. I'll be hanging fire until spring at least as he'll only be 7. He'll also have forgotten all about it by then
