Methven still claiming credit

The club was in a better place when he left it compared to when he came.

I'm 99% sure this is a wind up, but on this point...

This is factually incorrect. He left his position at the club in 2019, after steering us to 11th in League One. He sold his shares later, but for almost the entire time he was directly involved in day-to-day aspects of the club, he presided over abject failure.

I'll say it again: Cutting is the easy part. You could bring in a golden retriever with a set of dice and achieve cuts. The intent is to move upwards, and that was something he was unable to do. Claiming credit for KLD coming, Speakman coming, and because one player who barely played has ended up being at the club throughout that journey, is an incredible reach. He failed miserably on every level, and the fact that at least 3 proposed ownership groups ran a mile when they saw the inner workings of the shell he had created, tells you that it was likely significantly worse than he would ever admit.

Nobody has played a greater role in almost destroying us as a football club. Claiming credit because he was eventually forced out after lying brazenly about how they funded their purchase, alienating everyone with attacks on the fan base and failing in every critical role he claimed for himself, is his legacy. A fraud of a man, almost in the literal sense.

Beautifully put.

Absolutely spot on.

I am finally at the point where I no longer allow myself to waste time and positive energy in thinking about those few years under those two scumbags.

The current regime, from owners, recruitment team, Speakman, Regis right down to the players is all I want to think about now. What a journey, probably appreciate this season more due to what we have had to endure in league one.

So what was he doing helping to recruit Speakman and KLD after this if like you say he wasn’t even involved in the club?

The man made mistakes but he inherited an absolute shambles. The club were leaking 27 million pounds a year debt when he came in and were 180 million pounds in debt. How can you say he left it in a worse place than that? Just because he wasn’t involved in day to day running doesn’t mean he wasn’t influential behind the scenes. He was a still a shareholder.

When Charlie talks people listen - Speakman & KLD certainly did and wouldn’t be here now without Methven’s charismatic headhunting.

It is hard to overstate just how broken Sunderland AFC were when Charles intervened. £180 million in debt (much of it to aggressive money-lenders at exorbitant interest rates), and losing £27 million per annum on an operational basis, the club had just finished bottom of the Championship. The average crowd that season at the SoL had been a paltry (by SAFC standards) 27,000.

He inherited a shambles. Players on multi-season multi-million contracts who were quite open about not wanting to play for the club. Charles along with Stewart Donald chopped out the waste that had brought the club low. He re-engaged the fan base. His passion at the away games was clear to see and he was generous buying pints to a fan base who embraced him initially.

He brought in Luke Onien & headhunted Kristjaan Speakman during the pandemic. He then travelled to the Italian Lakes during the pandemic to persuade Kyril Dreyfus to take over the club. To bring those 3 to the club Mr Methven deserves credit not continuous vitriol. The club was in a better place when he left it compared to when he came.

Having read your summary on Charles Methven, it's obvious to all that you're absolutely the only qualified man to answer this question..... " Does Methven's dick taste saltier, or Donald's? "

Mag tw@t.

He didn’t inherit what you say. Even on their original press conference they stated the club was debt free. Short cleared the debt and Bane had already started the cost cutting so we weren’t losing £27m a year by then. Thats what it was at its peak during the premier league.
Look back and see when he officially left his day to day role at the club and then compare that to the dates Speakman came in and when KLD bought the club. It’s a year difference. He wasn’t working at the club then although he did try to weasel his way back in when things started to get better but sharp got chased.

Charles says otherwise on his LinkedIn.

So just because someone tries to give a bit of balance they are a Mag twat? I’ve been to over 1,000 Sunderland games mate. Less of the insults please.

Incredible.

I don’t wish to go on and on but claiming the work of others is just something that really boils my p*ss.
Methven even claims the whole recruitment strategy was his brainchild and the current owners are reaping the rewards by following his guidelines. Absolute bullshit. At no point during his tenure did we have a recruitment strategy that operated in such a manner. We didn’t even have any scouts ffs.

Except it wasn't debt free. It still owed SBC £25m, but Short had hidden it in Drumaville on the understanding that it would be paid from the parachute.

Is he your dad mate?
No mate I just remember him fondly from an exchange at Peterborough away in 2019. I didn’t have down as a fraud then and still don’t. He was a genuine man who isn’t the devil people are portraying him as.

Genuine man :lol::lol:

Sounds like hes bought you a pint or something. Wouldn't be the first time hes had defenders on here because of that.

Bloke is an absolute fool man. One of the stains in the clubs history.

My point was the claim Methven made during the press conference. He can’t claim it was debt free (although we now know that was bullshit) and then claim it was £180m in debt when he took over. The bloke just a pure bullshitter.
