Meadow Well Riots

I remember the two lads killed on what is now the silver link slip road. I knew them by sight but not my sort....if you know what I mean. Ram raiders just stole their next car to plough into a local business....ended up fried alive.
I was lying on the bed and getting a whiff of smoke so stick me head out the front door and could see the foggy smoke and an orange glow coming from what was the community centre. I think a few fires were started as decoys so that the pillage of local businesses could ensue. I walked up and there was contraband all over. Helicopter buzzing above iirc watching where the goodies were being taken. Coppers all over saying pick nothing up or you'll be done for looting. Seemed the shops targeted were the shops of the Asian community. Place was like a shithole. As I walked home I passed by vans of plodheading into the war zone. Fair few were later jailed. The ridges set off a chain reaction locally and nationally.
I'm sure those fried alive will know their barbecue wasn't in vain.

I’d just arrived back from holiday the day after and I remember the taxi driver saying they were expecting it to spread to Sunderland that night. It didn’t.

I remember on the 2nd night when it spread to the west end (which was arguably worse and went on for another 3 nights until it rained) that my gran who lived in Benwell had to come and stay with us. At that time the west end had the highest arson rate in Europe (even before the riots).

The meadowell riots were kicked off by the deaths of 2 young joyriders (although their parents famously denied they were joyriders staring they were professional car thieves..) during a police chase where the community blamed the police. Both meadowell and the West end were tough places at the time with mass youth unemployment and the riots were always going to happen (not condoning people stoning and housing petrol bombs at the police and destroying property) it just seemed inevitable at the time.

I think the words used, is that they "were out grafting"

I was still at school at the time and remember gearing others saying the same thing.

With hindsight, they’d be fucked by the time they walked to Sunderland.

The day after the meadiwell riots there was a sign hanging round a lamppost on Armstrong Road in Benwell saying riots tonight kick off 7pm (seriously)

Basically copycat behaviour there was also disturbances in walker and Wallsend in the East end too.
The chronic will be treating those making out they were involved aS heroes

I lived in Benwell for £15 / week at the time.

Moved to a bigger gaff top of Elswick Rd for £20 / wk.

Brilliant times

That was the exact words, one of the imbecilic family members sought to justify dumb and dumbers crimes as almost legitimate employment,I cringed at the words “They just went out grafting like”

I was working on the clean up at the time, only allowed to work in pairs, nee fucker about in the mornings.
