Mayenda discussion thread

I think he's looked better on the right (apart from today) but has recently put in a bit of quality from the left in terms of crosses. In terms of overall game on either sides he's a bit like Ba in that you never quite know what you're going to get in terms of beating a man, delivery, dribbling or if he ball will just bounce off him or he's miss control it. He's never going to be a winger, he's just not good enough.

As a striker earlier in the season and a couple of times last season he showed he had some traits to his game where he could maybe be effective. Last season he looked ridiculously raw and horrendous when presented with a chance in front of goal, whereas early this season he showed some composure. But in recent games that composure has absolutely deserted him again.

I generally prefer him to Connolly in our system as he's more dynamic, but today I was more than happy to see him replaced. Its a difficult one but I think he needs a run of games up front and we need someone better right now than him.
Good post. Exactly my feelings. He's improved considerably on last season but generally doesn't seem to be that arsed either way

I think there's a player in there and he was fine today. But that miss was inexcusable, as was Blackburns but to do it two games running is criminal

Mayender is doing fine when you look at him as a squad player whose nineteen and still learning his trade. 16 games, 2 goals and 3 assists this season, several of which is odd the bench.

Think that's a decent return. The fault doesn't lie in Mayender but in us not having a prolific first team goalscorer.

I mean the lad has his flaws but has time to iron them out and he'll only do that with games and experience. Unfortunately the two lads ahead of him have either been inconsistent or not hot it running. Hopefully they'll all click at somepoint.

David Bellion on roids.

Game can be developed but a goal scorer is an instinct that you’ve either got on you haven’t.

The chance at Blackburn I can forgive to an extent but the header today? Literally everything was wrong about it, timing off the run, body shape, timing of the effort, contact…everything! That’s not unlucky that’s woeful.

The Blackburn chance was typical of what we briefly saw last season and the header you mention though - took too long to make his mind up, couldnt get it onto his left or take it in his stride, total indecision and a lack of composure meant he done absolutely nothing with it, which with a chance like that is every bit as bad as today's.

Worryingly there's more of a trend of no composure with him in those situations than there is of what we saw against Sheff Wed and maybe once or twice in moments since. Probably needs regular games to develop and gain confidence and see if he ever get it.

Gifts against West Brom, Blackburn and today have cost us 5, if not 7 points. His age is immaterial. If he doesn’t have it now, he’ll never have it unless we put some serious work into his mindset and composure.
Even then, it may not as strikers are a rare breed where you either have it or you don’t.
Not a winger think he’s just a sniffer really he’s overall game isn’t good just a bit of a Jonny on the spot
You have to be on a wind-up? He’s the exact opposite of that at the minute.

Not at all his goals have been mainly tap ins the box that have fell for him playing as a winger he’s not good enough footballer

I hate poor technique by professional players who have literally all week to practice and I'm afraid today that was horrendously poor.

He missed an easier chance in more or less the exact same way against Stoke at home. He is facing away from goal and heading the ball in the middle of his forehead. It's not rocket science, the ball will go in more or less a straight line.

He needs to connect with the ball with the side of his head, glancing the ball which is piss easy. The manager / coaches should have been on his case after the Stoke miss at home.

A far harder skill is to use your neck muscles to turn into the ball at the last second and time it using the middle of your forehead. That's the only way to score the way he was trying but it's a daft way to make an easy chance hard.

He just timed it all wrong
