Mayenda discussion thread

I'm no tactical expert so feel free to critique...

To get Mayenda and WIlson playing together centrally, we'd need to go from a single pivot (Neil) to a double pivot (Neil and Jobe) in possession. This would mean ditching the 433 for a 4231 (which you see a lot of in the prem). Right from pre season Regis instilled a model that is based on the single pivot when we have the ball. Would it be difficult to change at this stage of the season? Or is there really not that much difference between a 433 and a 4231?

I think it would be easier to coach Mayenda into playing the role Rigg has been doing than vice versa.

He’s not gonna be the best midfielder ever but against the weaker teams, especially at home, we’ve got to find a way of getting them both on the pitch.

I think he’s actually a lot better on the ball than he looks at times, underrated how good he is.

He’s a handful and has improved all season. Had a couple of low points with key misses but good to see him get a chance last night and take it well.

Needs to be in a two with Wilson.
He's very good on the ball imo (not all the time obviously). He's played some outstanding weighted through balls, some wonderful longer cross field passes. Happy to receive the ball in ridiculously tight positions on the touch line and not only keep the ball in play but also then somehow get through and past players. Got a wand of a left foot but seems comfortable with the right also.

Our out of possession shape is often 4-4-2 so it would fit that

The issue would be games where we’re getting a lot of the ball, I think le Bris likes 3 in the middle to help control the game

We’d probably lose the ball more but might find we stretch the game more as well. It would require both Isidor and Mayenda being alert to when to drop deeper to pick up the ball and turn and either run or pass.

For what it’s worth, I’d be up for trying it against the right oppo

Totally agree mate. He looks awkward but he’s remarkably successful at both winning and keeping the ball under pressure and as you say he’s played some high quality passes at times such as the link up with Wilson. If anything was missing in his game it was his finishing, but that looks like it’s improving now. Hopefully last night paves the way to seeing more of him and Wilson on the pitch together as I think we are better that way.

Talented lad and causes defences problems, mad to think he didn’t get a chance at Hibs last season
I didn’t see yesterday but have seen his goals. I think his best game of the season was as far back as Burnley at home. Those 2 CBs just bounced off him. He’s Raw but he’s a handful. Said loads on here that he reminds me of Antonio at West Ham. Willing runner. Strong as an ox. Will miss sitters, not prolific but chips in. Scares defences.
