Martin O'Neill


Rumour has it that Celtic’s changing their walk out song to the Hokey Cokey. If I was Martin I’d have took Dermot Desmond for a ride… “I want double what you paid me last time”

Saw a mental stat earlier today dunno if it was shared here, but O’Neill’s first interim gig lasted longer than Nancy’s permanent stint (37 days vs 33 days) 😂
 
Ellis Short went through 10 managers in 10 years (not counting the caretakers) under those circumstances its hard not to conclude that rather than his appointees it was Short who was the problem. During his tenure Martin O'Neil faired no better and no worse than anyone else,. In the Sunderland Manager role they were all subjected to the organisational structure that had been established by Short. I don't think that any of those managers had anything good to say about how Short ran the Club and most left on very bad terms with him.

The impression I got was that as someone from the the US business world he didn't understand the role of a manager in a football club who he regarded as almost blue collar middle tier. He seemed to be much more impressed and swayed by executives and board members whose advice he seemed to prefer over and above that of his manager. He was of course desperate to find someone to run the Club for him but rather than looking towards his managers he either brought in bullshitters from the outside or at one stage even elevated the Club's Legal Secretary to the post.

On another note I always love the way Keano refers to O'Neil as "Murton O'Neil" . It always seems to me to suggest that O'Neil has much closer link to Sunderland and Country Durham than just his early boyhood interest

Intruiged that everyone in the game seemingly dislikes Ellis. In his (very limited) media interviews he seemed a quiet and calm man. Obviously he was clueless about football and pissed away hundreds of millions leading to our demise, but to be so resoundingly disliked personally is interesting to hear.
